My parents have a laptop that was infected with a Windows Defender fake AV virus and which I thought I had successfully removed (Self removal attempt). Since doing so I decided to install Bitdefender Internet Security 2011 on their machine however when they go online after a time Bitdefender will shut down suddenly. Thinking it may be an install issue I contacted Bitdefender and after they looked at it remotely I have been told the machine has a “registry problem” which I believe is remnants of the Windows Defender AV which I tried to remove. I think the fake AV is shutting Bitdefender down. The machine displays the classic signs of an infection as it runs slow and freezes. THANK YOU AGAIN for the WONDERFUL assistance offered here! Hi,

:welcome:

My name is NoodleTech. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
As I'm still in training at What The Tech, all my posts needs to be checked by an expert first. This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.
NoodleTech- Thank you for your offer to look at this. It is appreciated. I noted in your reply that you were going to review my log and you indicated it was Hijack this. Do you want me to provide you with one as in my initial post I copied/pasted a DDS log that I ran on the machine? Please advise. Again ~THANK YOU!

NoodleTech- Thank you for the reply. I ran the MBAM scan as advised and the results are below. In regards to the ESET online scan the problem I am running into when doing this on my parent’s laptop is the virus it has is shutting down Bitdefender while online and that is when the machine gets slow and freezes up. When Bitdefender is shut down (icon goes black) the machine becomes sluggish/freezes. So I have been downloading the tools you give me on my laptop and then I run them on my parent’s laptop. The time I can get online on my parent’s laptop varies but I have noticed that the windows security center will pop up (in the system tray) during (or shortly after) bootup from time to time and that the icon will indicate “not protected”. The Bitdefender icon will show as running. This will then go away and when I go to control panel and look at the security center it will be okay. :blush: So is there a tool that I can use other than ESET so that we can further evaluate? NoodleTech- I second thought I decided to add this as it may give you further insight into how the situation evolves: 1.) The machine is booted up and Bitdefender loads and indicates it is running and the machine is protected. 2.) The machine is connected to the internet and Bitdefender shows it is running for awhile then the icon goes black and bitdefender services indicates that it has stopped running and the laptop needs to be restarted. 3.) When you pull up bitdefender it says that indicates a “no account created” and then the screen changes and says "vsserv" is unavailable. I have attached screenshots of the state of bitdefender during each of these states below. 1.) beforeonline.jpg - this is the state of bitdefender when the machine is booted up and before I connect to the internet. 2.) afteronline1.jpg - this is that state of bitdefender after the machine is connected to the internet for a short period of time (and after the icon in the system tray goes black). 3.) afteronline2.jpg - this is the state of bitdefender shortly following afteronline1.jpg appears. Now after numerous contacts with Bitdefender they have ASSURED me that my license/key is valid for this machine. Your thoughts? I Hope this helps!
Running ComboFix
Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

——————————————————————–
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
——————————————————————–

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.
NoodleTech-

I ran the ComboFix download the first time on my parents laptop and for some reason it would not produce a report. The laptop froze (black Bitdefender icon) and I waited a long time but not report. So I shut down the machine and ran it again which produced the below report. I do know the first run did remove some infections which I hope the <–Previous Run–> portion outlines below. I am thinking we may still have some locked registry problems and a c:\windows\system32\drivers\ntfs.sys infection?

Thanks again!

Hi ToddB,

Thanks for the log. One of the critical system drivers on your computer is infected and we will need to replace it. Do you have a copy of the Windows Vista Home Premium installation CD? Or another computer running Windows Vista Home Premium?

===================================================

Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

Folder::
c:\users\Jess\AppData\Roaming\kzcuhh

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:57030
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local

RegLock::
[HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts]
Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log using Copy / Paste
