Hello tickedoffmom and :welcome:

My name is JonTom

  • Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
  • Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.

I see a few things wrong here, but before we do any fixing I would like to take a closer look at your machine with the following scans:

  • Please perform the following scan

    • Please download DDS from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
    • Right click on the DDS icon and select "Run as Administrator" to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run).
    • When done, DDS.txt will open.
    • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    • Please post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs in your next reply.

  • Please scan your system with GMER

    [external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
    • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
    • Right click on GMER.exe and select "Run as Administrator" to run the program. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries.

Please post the DDS logs and the GMER log in your next reply. If you encounter any problems with the scans just let me know.
yes, please. we have had some issues with the computer not wanting to allow us to go to other web sites. it kept saying that our computer was infeted and when you tried to close it, it wouldn't let you. i restarted the computer and restored it. i appologize for the delay. i am about to run the insturctions that you gave. i will post them when they are done. thank you so much for your help.
i have the DDS done, i hope i have attached them correctly. I can't get GMER Rootkit to save. it will scan but it just stalls when trying to save the results. I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but the problems are coming from my 16 year old son surfing porn (hence the screen name). I know those sites are loaded with all kinds of viruses, malware, spyware, etc. should i try running GMER again and copy and pasting the results?

Hello tickedoffmom

any suggestions?

Lets try this:

  • GMER

    • If you are having trouble getting GMER to complete a scan, please run it again, but this time uncheck everything EXCEPT "Sections" and "C:\".
    • If GMER does not produce a log please try running it from Safe Mode.

    • How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart your computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the "Advanced Options" menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item.
    • Press Enter.

    • If GMER in safe mode does not work, please try Rootkit Unhooker:

  • Rootkit Unhooker

    • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker and Save it to your desktop.
    • Now right-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe and select "Run as Administrator" to run it.
    • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
    • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest, then Click OK.
    • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
    • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.

Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply here.

Note: You may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Please provide the GMER/Rootkit Unhooker log in your next reply. If you are still having trouble, come back and let me know.
GMER still wouldn't work, even in safe mode. Below is the report from Rootkit Unhooker. Sorry i had to copy/paste it, as it would not let me attach it as a file. Thanks again for your help. Hello tickedoffmom

Thank you for the log.

Sorry i had to copy/paste it

No problem at all. Please do the following:

  • Please perform the following scan:

    • Please download MalwareBytes AntiMalware by clicking here and save the file (called mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

    • Right click on the mbam-setup.exe icon and select "Run as Administrator" to install the program.
    • Follow the prompts during installation and have the Installation Wizzard create a desktop icon.
    • Once installed, double click on the MalwareBytes AntiMalware icon to launch the program.
    • Click on the "Update" tab and then on "Check for Updates".
    • The program will now install the latest Malware definition files.
    • Once complete, click on the "Scanner" tab, select "Perform Quick Scan"and then click on "Scan".
    • Once the program has scanned your computer, a log file will be created in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.

    • If the scan detects any Malware-related objects, make sure that everything is checked, and click "Remove Selected" <– Very Important.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer.
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the "Logs" tab.

Hello tickedoffmom

Thank you for the logs :)

We are making progress. I would like to take a closer look at your master boot record (MBR) as it may be infected. Please do the following:

  • MBRCheck

  • Please download MBRCheck by clicking here and save it to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs.
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt).
  • A window will open on your desktop.
  • If an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter.
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.
Hello JonTom, I tried clicking on the link that you posted but it is coming up as a blank page. Can you paste the link in the post for me? Thanks so very much :)
Hello tickedoffmom

I tried clicking on the link that you posted but it is coming up as a blank page.

Strange? It works just fine for me (thanks for mentioning it though, always good to know  ).

Lets hold off from MBRCheck for now and run the following tool instead:

  • Combofix

  • Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2

  • VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here .
  • Right click on ComboFix.exe and select "Run as Administrator" to run the program. Follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  • Notes: Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  • Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
