Hey,

My computer was infected today and im not sure how to go about fixing it. When i turned on my computer today it was moving at a snails pace. It was so slow that it would not open firefox or any programs for that matter. The only way to get any programs running was to turn it on in safe mode which i am currently writing this post from. Without running on safe more it takes longer than 30 minutes to load up, and is useless from that point on. I would really appreciate your help.

Heres the OTL log, i also added a hijackthis log for good measure:

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
My computer was running exetremely slow before and seems to be getting worse. Not running in safe mode takes about 5-10 minutes to load the desktop screen and any folder or program takes 5-10 minutes to open as well. Firefox also does not open anymore, theres an error message that pops up. When i reboot in safe mode with networking the computer runs faster but still noticably slower than normal. There have been no changes to how the computer is behaving. Before seeking your help I had run malware bytes antimalware and spywear search and destroy, both fully updates versions and also there were no changes. 2011/01/04 18:39:55.0241 TDSS rootkit removing Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
i attempted to run combo fix and it seemed to be working fine, after 30 minutes it rebooted. i tried to get it to reboot in safe mode but it didnt and was moving in slow motion again. It then said it was going to produce a log and not to open any files, after 2 hours an error pops up so i am going to try it again. The error says: PEV.cfxxe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. I ran combo fix again under safe mode this time it did not reboot, but the error still popped up while it was preparing a log report. After a while longer the report comes up. Since firefox stopped working a while ago i've been using internet explorer which has just stopped working. a download pops up called search_conduit_com.htm from search.conduit.com which i refuse. After refusing the download internet explorer closes, i transfered the combo fix log with a usp and am now posting from a different computer with internet. 1. All tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe)
With Admin Rights (Right click on HijackTHis each time you use it, choose "Run as Administrator")

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Ask.com
BitTorrentBar
ConduitEngine

Reboot and let me know how it's running
i uninstalled the listed programs. when i tried to uninstall ask tool bar it said that is was inaccessible in safe mode so i rebooted. In normal mode it took around 30 minutes to get the desk top loaded again, another 20 minutes to get to add remove programs and ask tool bar didn't show up in the list this time. The computer is still behaving very slow unless run in safe mode
I'm not seeing any infections.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
after retrying the ESET scan twice it seems to not find any viruses but internet explorer crashes when its at 99% complete. and combo fix reboots my computer and says it cannot find the specified path. then during the log report process it comes up with the PEV.cfxxe error over and over so i dont have a combo fix log for you… im trying again though
this time after it begins to reboot i get it to go into safe mode. combo fix starts the log report but windows comes up with a crash report saying that it was automatically restart in 1 minute. the PEV.cfxxe eroor pops up and then it starts to reboot. During the reboot it says one of my disks may need to be checked.
1. Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:
Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow <–Note the space, it needs to be there

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
i start the scan following all your instructions. it gets to 8% and stops, then after a while it says: Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
