Hi bergferg,

Don't worry about the AVG detections, they are in System Restore and won't reinfect you unless you restore to that point. We will remove them during the course of the cleaning process.

Download and run TDSKiller with the instructions I previously gave you in Post #6. Only do the TDSKiller instructions in that post.

Please post the log when it's completed.

Thanks

Hi bergferg,

Looks like TDSKiller got it. This next tool will require you uninstall AVG otherwise it won't run. Just transfer the log to another computer to post it.

Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with the combofix log. How is the computer?

Thanks

Hi bergferg,

Just to make sure, do I need to completely uninstall the AVG program, or just disable it? If I completely remove it, or disable it, and I am asked to download something for ComboFix, will I be vulnerable to more issues, and I leave it running, will the CF work properly?

Thanks for the direction.

Gavin
Hi bergferg,

do I need to completely uninstall the AVG program, or just disable it?

AVG is very aggressive when it comes to combofix. So much so that combofix has been programed to give you a warning that it has detected the presence of AVG. Once you acknowledge the warning the tool will close. You can not continue without acknowledging the warning. So yes AVG needs to be completely uninstalled.

I am asked to download something for ComboFix, will I be vulnerable to more issues

I suppose there is always the risk of something landing on the computer while combofix is downloading the Recovery Console. I've never had it happen though. Combofix will disable your internet connection while it is running.

To allay your concerns we can do this a bit different with the same results. AVG will still need to be uninstalled.

Download combofix and save it to your desktop. Don't run it, we'll run it differently in a bit.

Download this version of the Recovery Console, Pro and save it to your desktop.

Even though the page will say Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 , this is the correct version for your operating system.
  • Disconnect completely from the internet, pull the plug on the modem if you need to.
  • Uninstall AVG
  • Make sure any other of your security programs have been disabled per the previous instructions.
  • Make sure the copy of combofix you have is also located on the desktop.
  • With your left mouse button, drag the file onto the combofix icon as shown below.
  • This will start combofix so don't do anything else.
  • When asked to continue scanning for malware click Yes.

If the above image is not animated, click on it.

It may be easier to transfer the combofix log to one of your other computer to post it just in case we need to use combofix again.

Thanks

Hi

Good job with the instructions.

You can reinstall AVG now if you wish or you can wait untill after these next 2 scans are completed. We can also scan your backed up files at the same time.

You have this program installed, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Please update it and run a scan.

Open MBAM

  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • The program will close to update and reopen.
  • Once the program has loaded, attach the jumpdrive to the computer while holding down the shift key.
  • select "Perform Full Scan",
  • Make sure the drive letter for your jumpdrive and C:\ are selected then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

One more scan to do.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Go here to run an online scannner from
ESET

(Note: You can use either Internet Explorer of FireFox for this scan. If you use FireFox you will be asked to install an additional component. Please allow this.

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Advanced settings
  • Beside "Current scan target: Oerating memory. local drives" click change
  • Make sure the jumpdrive drive letter and C:\ drive is checked
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. or C:\Program Files\ESET\log.txtWe will need this later.

Please post back with the MBAM and ESET logs.

Thanks.

Hi bergferg,

That looks good.

From your desktop, please delete, if present
  • any notepads/logs that we created
  • Flash_Disinfector.exe
  • TDSSkiller.zip
  • TDSSkiller.exe
  • GMER (m67lrhvv.exe)
You can also delete the TDSKiller log from the C:\ drive.

Eset can be uninstalled via add/remove programs.

Next

Click the Start button, click Run. Copy and paste the following line into the run box and click OK
Combofix /uninstall

Open OTL then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTL wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it regularly.

Updates and upgrades

Your java is out of date.
  • Go to Java
  • Scroll down to Java Platform, Standard Edition section. The subheading is Java SE 6 Update 23,

You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
  • Scroll down and click on Windows Offline Installation,
  • Save the file jre-6u 23-windows-i586.exe to your desktop;
Do not select Run . Do not install it yet.

When the download is complete, close your browser.

Do not uninstall Java TM 6 Update 23 if found! :yeah:

Reboot your computer.

  • Double-click on the saved file ( jre-6u23-windows-i586.exe) to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Next, clear the java cache

To clear the Java Plug-in cache:
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
  • On the General tab, Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
  • On the Temporary Files Settings screen, Click Delete Files.
  • check all boxes
  • Click OK

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

Take care
Well, everything appears to be running correctly, without issue. I just upgraded my RAM from 512mb to 2GB, so the computer is running even more smoothly. I can't thank you enough for the help OldMan, and will be making a contribution to this site to keep it running. Thank you again, and feel free to close the topic.
