I cannot open Mozilla or Google Chrome. It say the .exe file for these has been infected with W32 blaster worm. I tried to download one ot the three required programs, but they will not run, also says the .exe is infection for whichever I try. I have managed to get IE open, and that is what I am using. I get this security warning opening that says computer is at risk A malicious program has beedn detected. I ran my Spyware Doctor and it removed all the infected files it found. Dont know where to go from here. Please help and thank you. Not sure how to get the Hijack this or the other program to run.
Hi,

:welcome:

My name is NoodleTech. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
As I'm still in training at What The Tech, all my posts needs to be checked by an expert first. This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.
Thanks for looking at the problem. Not sure if we can do anything, because none of my .exe files will run. I decided the only thing left for me to do was reformat, but I cannot even do that. When I tried that, it said It could not find my hard drive and could not continue. I can open IE, and go to some sites, but that is about it. I have PC Tools Spyware Doctor which runs weekly. I can run a scan with it and it removed infections, and now it shows no infections. Very confusing to me. Thanks for your time..
Hi kitzie,

Print out these instructions as we may need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested in this guide on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 5 different versions.  If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.
  • rkill.exe
  • rkill.com
  • rkill.scr
  • WiNlOgOn.exe
  • uSeRiNiT.exe

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

===================================================

Next, please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

===================================================

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I could not download anything to this computer. I got the first program rkill.exe on a CD and got it on the computer and ran it.
Here is that log This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

Rkill was run on 01/04/2011 at 6:12:30.

Rkill completed on 01/04/2011 at 6:13:05.

I tried to download the second one, but my behavior guard blocked it as a threat. Should I turn off this process first? I ran the Malware program it removed two infected files. The notices have since gone away, and the computer is running alot better at this time.

Hi kitzie,

Could you please try to download exehelper and run it again?

Also, post the log from the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan.

If you can't find it, the logs are located at: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs.

===================================================

Next, I would like you to run ComboFix.

Please read through the instructions to familiarize yourself with what to expect when the tool runs.

It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it has even started to download

Please download ComboFix from Link 1or Link 2 to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    -Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, before you save it to your desktop, rename Combofix to jgh.exe

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix

———————————————————–

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe (jgh.exe in your case) & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with
  • combofix log
How is the computer?

Thanks

I am presently using PC TOOLS Spyware Doctor and Antivirus. I disabled the intelliguard and thought I was good to go. When I attempted to run combo, it said it detected pc antivirus and not to continue. Not sure how to disable it, and it was not listed in the article you referred me to. So I will wait to hear back before I continue. Computer is running better, it seems to be taking longer to open mozilla browser though. thanks again
Hi kitzie,

I don't see any antivirus running on your computer, so you should be fine. Let's try running Combofix in safe mode.

To boot into safe mode follow these steps:
  • Turn on or restart your computer
  • As the computer is booting, press and hold your F8 Key
  • This should bring up the Windows Advanced Options Menu
  • Use your arrow keys to move to Safe Mode with Networking and press your Enter Key
When the computer boots up, run Combofix and post the log when it has finished.
I ran ComboFix and here is the log.

Computer seems to be running good at this time. anything else >? and many thanks
Hi kitzie,

We are almost done here. Let's clean up the remnants of AVG antivirus and run a final scan to ensure everything is clean.

Please download AppRemover and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on AppRemover.exe to run it.
  • Uncheck "Enable anonymous usage statistics. No personal data will be recorded."
  • Click on the Next button.
  • Click on "Remove Security Application" or "Clean Up a Failed Uninstall" depending on what you want to do. (you want the failed uninstall)
  • Click on the Next button.
  • A scan begins, please wait. Once done, click on the Next button.
  • Now you should have a list of your installed programs, choose the one you want to remove (AVG) and click on the Next button.
  • Follow the last step and reboot if asked to do so.
===================================================

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\Program Files\ESET\log.txt into your next reply.
I ran the AppRemover program. It did not show any avg remaining . I tried using both options. I ran the Eset Scan. The power in my house went out just as it was finishing up, so I am not sure of those results. I ran it again, here is that log. Hi kitzie,

We are almost done here.

Please do the following:

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy/paste Combofix /uninstall into the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

===================================================

I notice you are not running any anti-virus software. It is important to have anti-virus software installed on your computer to actively protect you against malicious software and security threats.

Please download Microsoft Security Essentials, a free anti-malware program.

Link

Double click mseinstall.exe to start the installation.

Follow the prompts to install and update the program.

===================================================

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl and click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected and Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to Prompt, and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to Disable.
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis.  With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update   regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

4. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

5. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?
I am using PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Anti virus. Not sure why it doesnt show up. I removed Combofix. I will download mse , will the two programs interfere with each other? thanks for helping, am I good to go now?
Hi kitzie, I assumed that you were running the regular PC Tools Spyware Doctor with no anti-virus. In that case, don't download MSE. You are good to go
Thanks sooo much. You all do such a great service. I appreciate all your help, and will follow all your recommendations. Keep up the good work. :)
