My NAV is telling me I have a virus called mtvok and that it is a trojan, but it cannot quaranteen it or delete it. the file is in windows.mtvok.exe. Spybot S&D does not find it. Does anybody know anything about this and how to get rid of it. pam

I could find no info on any file or trojan or virus named that. I even went to the Symantec site and searched.

If you think a file (or files) on your system may be infected, you can go here:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html

And submit the file for a free online scan.

If you want further evaluation of your system, please do this:

Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder (use the link in my signature).

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Run it from that folder.

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

Reply to this thread, and post the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread.
:)
Here is my hijack log. I also just realized that this appeared after I downloaded the newest version of Spybot S&D Wednesday morning. I ran S&D which found problems, some of which required it to run at reboot. It cleared all problems, but when the NAV ran this morning, the trojan was there. When I re-ran S&D the NAV warning kept popping up about the mtvok.exe trojan infection. I downloaded the same S&D from the same site on two other computers (with XP OS) and haven't had a problem.

Please try these 3 online virus scan/removal tools:

Trend-Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

Etrust:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Let the programs remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

If they find but cannot remove something, please post that info (file names/locations & infection names) in your next post.

It would be nice if you could provide a complete description of the infection.

Does your NAV say exactly what type of infection (the trojan or virus name), or just simply that you are infected?

If these 3 files are still around after you run your virus scans:

C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\PELWXY.EXE
C:\WINDOWS.000\SZCUTVCJE.EXE
C:\WINDOWS.000\MTVOK.EXE

Could you please go to this link:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html

And submit them (one at at time) for a scan, and post the results. :)

After running all the scans, reboot and post new log file. You have some "adware" on your machine that needs removed as well as your trojan infection.
I ran windows.000.mtvok.exe through the kaspersky.com and it said it was clean. NAV says the file windows.000.mtvok.exe is infected. The type of infection is a trojan. I'll try the other sites now.
Hijack log attached. I have run housecall which found a few things and deleted. The panda link does not work. The other link came out clean. I ran the kasperky which found something in the first file and I downloaded and ran their trial version. Only after I did that did I realize I should have check back with you first. The trial version found everything except the mtvok. Now I have a missing DLL at startup and my IE is giving me illegal operation windows and is just not working properly. Did I mess things up?

Please go back to my first post and review how to make a folder for Hijack This! and move it there. You need to get it off the desktop and into a folder of it's own.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!

Run Hijack this! from it's new folder, and fix these items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.topfivesearch.com/sidesearch.asp

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how.

Find and delete:

C:\WINDOWS.000\ALCHEM.exe <— file

C:\WINDOWS.000\szcutvcje.exe <— file

C:\WINDOWS.000\mtvok.exe <— file

C:\Program Files\LimeWire <— FOLDER

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to tell you how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode and post a new log file. :)
The missing dll file is SHFOLDER.DLL. Also, I can't seem to move my hijackthis to a new folder. It just creates a shortcut. Will this work? For some reason I can't seen to download another copy. I don't know if it's because of this problem I seemed to create with my browser or if it's something else. pam
I got my DLL back! Thank you! I tried to download HijackThis again, but it still doesn't work. I was able to download a MS critical update so I know I can download. I tried another computer and couldn't download HijackThis from there either. I think it's a merijn problem. I used your link, a link I found from a google search and also tried from download.com. Is there anything I can do with the version I already have on my desktop? pam
There's nothing wrong with your copy of Hijack This!.

It just needs to be in a "permanent" folder of it's own.

It makes log files and BACKUPS (which may come in handy). If you leave it where it is, it will just clutter up your desktop.

If the tutorial is not clear, try this:

1. Close all windows. Put the cursor in a vacant spot on the desktop.

2. Right-click. Choose "New" then "folder". A new folder appears on the desktop, and you need to give it a name. Name the folder "hjt".

3. Click on "HijackThis.exe" on the desktop then drag it on top of the new "hjt" folder you just made, then release the mouse button. Do this "click and drag" to any of the backups and log files Hijack This! has made on your desktop.

Now, to run Hijack This!, you just double-click on the HJT folder on the desktop. Then double click HijackThis.exe
:)
After deleting the kaspersy virus program my NAV stopped working so when I reinstalled, it found and quarantined the mtvok trojan. Don't know why it didn't quarantine it the first time it found it, but it's gone now. I followed the instructions for hijackthis and removed everything except the limewire folder. If I do that, won't it delete my limewire program? Here is a new hijack scan. If everything is okay with it, I think we're done. Thank you so much for your help.

Yes, you are correct about Limewire.

The only reason I suggested removing it is because it is "Adware". It can bring unwanted pop-ups and also degrade your systems performance.

If you don't mind the possible "side effects", then leave Limewire on your machine. It's your machine, and your choice. :)

The last thing needing fixing can be done with CWShredder.

Please download CWShredder from the link in my signature.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND PROGRAMS!!!

Run CWShredder. Click "Fix", and let it fix what it can.

Afterwards, run Hijack This! and fix this (if it's still there):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.topfivesearch.com/sidesearch.asp

Reboot and post a new log file.

You may wish to go here:

http://answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_w.htm

And read about:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup
Here is my Hijack log. Everything is working and I hope I don't have any more problems. Thanks for the help.
