Worst Virus I've Ever Seen

I'm not sure exactly what I've got, came home to find my laptop shutting down on my fiancée. He said he was on 'Facebook,' and it was running oddly. I wasn't home so I'm not sure exactly how odd. I tried to boot, and for about a week the OS wouldn't even start. Eventually, if I let the computer sit for about two hours, my log in screen would display, I could type my password, and then if I waited about another hour, it would finally display my desktop. I've ran Malware Bytes, Super Anti Spyware, Avast and AVG, and they're not finding anything. The system runs extremely slow, webpages take about five minutes to load, 'This Copy Of Windows is Not Genuine' is now displayed in my bottom right hand screen, right below the taskbar, you can only read that if you try to drag the taskbar down, but this usually causes explorer to crash and the computer shuts down. Half my programs will not run at all. I have four GBs of RAM and I just purchased my computer in January for college. It's a Dell Inspiron, purchased from Best Buy, and I'm one hundred percent sure my copy of Windows 7 is genuine.

I've got my Hijack This log, so hopefully if anyone has any advice or pointers, let me know. Not too sure what I'm doing and any help will be greatly appreciated, I've got to start classes again next month and a working computer is kind of crucial.

Any questions or if more information is needed, please ask.

Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!
Please be advised I am still in training, and all of my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
This may cause a delay in response time, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I will post back shortly with instructions.
Hello, patndoris. Thank you so much for your quick reply and your assistance. I also have OTL downloaded so if you'd like those scans, just let me know. Thank you again for helping me, I appreciate it very much!
Also, I don't know if this will help or not, but a weird process now runs on my computer labeled ApMsgFwd.exe that I've never seen running before. Not sure if that's important, but I figured I'd mention it.
It would appear that you have more than one anti-virus solution on your machine. I can see both AVG and Avast installed. Having more than one anti-virus program on your machine, even if only one is running, can cause conflicts and slowdowns in the performance of the machine. Before continuing on, please completely uninstall one of the programs. The easiest way to do this is to visit one of these pages and use one of the removal tools listed below:
AVG Removal Tool
Avast Uninstall Utility

If you are not prompted to do so after the removal, please reboot your machine.

We Need to Diagnose a Possible Problem with WGA
  • Please download MGADiag and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.
  • Push [external image: Posted Image]
  • Push [external image: Posted Image]
  • Go to Start -> Run and type in "Notepad"
  • Go to Edit -> Paste in notepad.
  • x out all of the numbers and letters in the line beginning with "Windows Product Key:"
  • Copy and paste that log here.
When I tried to run the AVG uninstaller, I get the following message: Installer initialization failed due to following error: Error: Initialization of the language file "C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG9" failed. Initialization of languages failed or files count is zero. I'm trying to uninstall AVAST! now, but it's taking a bit. About the MGADiag, every time I try to go to that page, it looks like it's loading, then redirects me to about:blank in my browser URL bar. I tried copying the link address, searching MGADiag through Google and clicking the same link, and searching through Microsoft's website to try to reach it, but every time I try to get to that specific page to get the .exe, nothing loads. I'm not sure if it's a problem with Microsoft's website, which I've had happen to me before when I've tried to get drivers from it, or from me. I'm using Google Chrome, but my IE doesn't work. I've got IE8 without add ons, and it doesn't let me make any downloads with it. I've tried to get the updated IE but it won't install. Would you like me to try with Mozilla, or wait and try Microsoft's website again after time to see if it's possibly a problem with them?
It appears you have AVG9. If you want to uninstall AVG, please follow the additional uninstall intructions found here.

The Microsoft sites do not work well with Chrome. The best option is IE. If your IE is not working properly you can use Firefox (Mozilla) to download the file.

Since you are using Windows 7, please make sure when you run any of the tools we are working with, to right-click them and choose Run as Administrator.
Alright, I've got Avast! completely off. I'm not fond of AVG, so I'd like to take that one off for sure, but you said to remove 'one' so I'm not sure if I should take off AVG now or just wait, so I'll wait until I hear otherwise.

Got MGADiag to run, here's that log:

I understand that you don't care for AVG. After we finish removing any malware you can feel free to uninstall it and put back on the anti-virus solution of your choosing. For the time being though, even if it's not your preferred anti-virus, we don't want to leave your machine unprotected. Let's leave AVG alone for now so that we can address the other problems you are having.

Now that you've removed one of the AV programs, let's get an OTL log. I know you said you already have OTL downloaded, so please follow these instructions to do the scans:

OTL Custom Scan

  • Right-click the OTL icon and choose "Run as Administrator" to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click on Minimal Output at the top
  • Download the following file scan.txt to your Desktop. Click here to download it. You may need to right click on it and select "Save"
  • Double click inside the Custom Scan box at the bottom
  • A window will appear saying "Click Ok to load a custom scan from a file or Cancel to cancel"
  • Click the Ok button and navigate to the file scan.txt which we just saved to your desktop
  • Select scan.txt and click Open. Writing will now appear under the Custom Scan box
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

In addition, can you please let me know if you've seen any improvement in the speed since removing one of the anti-virus programs?
That's what I figured, not a problem. I downloaded the custom scan through Mozilla, and ran OTL, however, it only gave me one log, nothing labeled extras came up or saved near the OTL,txt. Speed wise, internet pages load a lot faster than they were, though nothing close to how they should be, but system performance is still terrible. Programs take about ten minutes to open after being clicked, and when the computer is restarted, it still takes about an hour and a half for Windows to boot. Posting the OTL.txt now.

========== Purity Check ==========

< End of report >
Let's start with the Windows Genuine problem:
Click on Start, then type in activate windows in the search box. After a few seconds you should see a box that looks like this:

[external image: Posted Image]

Can you please let me know if the activation box shows successful and if that removed the image from the bottom of the screen?

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scan

Note: It is recommended to disable on-board anti-virus program and anti-spyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your anti-virus along with your anti-spyware programs.

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the [external image: Posted Image] icon on your desktop.
  • Check [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check [external image: Posted Image]
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin
scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push [external image: Posted Image]
  • Push [external image: Posted Image], and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as
ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the [external image: Posted Image] button.
  • Push [external image: Posted Image]
It read 'Activation Successful.' The computer is still taking about an hour to boot up when restarted or turned on, not sure if that has to do with Windows activation. Programs are opening quicker but if you try to open some of the more complex programs, e.g. iTunes, Mozilla, Photoshop (just opened them to test), it takes about five minutes for them to open. ESET is coming up: Scan results No threats found. Scanned Files: 182530 Infected Files: 0 Cleaned files: 0 Total scan time: 01:44:16 Scan status: Finished. Thank you again for taking the time to help me.
If you have CDEmulation drivers installed (such as Daemon Tools, Alcohol120) please follow the instructions below to run DeFogger prior to and after running GMER. If you do not have any CDEmulation drivers installed, you do not need to run DeFogger and you can go right to the instructions to run GMER.

Download DeFogger

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download and Run GMER

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

I'd also like to have you try something else. We haven't looked at what happens in Safe Mode. I realize booting takes a long time, but it will be helpful to know if there are any differences in Safe Mode vs. normal mode.

Boot your computer in Safe Mode
  • Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded, start tapping the F8 key.
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode with Networking menu option.
  • Press Enter.
  • The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Log into your usual account
  • Things do move slower in Safe mode, but do some activities and see if there is any difference over what you have been experiencing.
  • When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.
I'm not sure if I have those drivers or not, so I went ahead and did the Defogger step just in case. No error messages, computer restarted. Took a riddiculously long time to boot up, and even when Windows finally loaded, each icon on the desktop (I have about ten, plus something labeled desktop.ini that keeps appearing) took about five minutes a piece to load. Then I went through the steps for GMER, however I had filled in boxes that were uncheckable where you asked me to uncheck. Also, the 'This Copy is Not Genuine' is back at the bottom. Not sure if you want me to run the Windows Activation again or not.
