Hi,

I have a Compaq laptop on which IE8 appears to have been hijacked. Pressing on a link from, say, Google takes me to one of many pages that have nothing to do with the link I pressed. I've run HiJackThis and the log is included below.

Many thanks,

Si.

Hello Si Aldworth and welcome to WhatTheTech. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted.
  • Any underlined text in my posts indicates a clickable link.
  • You should print any instructions I give you for ease of use and reference.
  • If you have any questions at all, please stop and ask before proceeding.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

If you have trouble running GEMR:
  • Make sure that your security software is disabled
  • Uncheck the box next to "Files" this time also
  • If you still can't run it, try in the Safe Mode
Please include the following in your next post:
  • DDS.txt and Attach.txt logs
  • GMER log

Attach.txt is attached. I would post Gmer.txt here but the file is empty. I hope all the above is ok but I did find that the links DDS.scr and DDS.com resulted in blank IE windows and the IAT/EAT and Show All check boxes in the GMER Rootkit Scanner window were greyed out (as were most of the others). Si Aldworth:

I'm sorry for the delay. I see that you are using a 64bit OS, so I will need one more scan from you:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and paste them into your next post.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • OTL.txt log

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) P2P - I see you have P2P software (Vuze & Limewire) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to malware infections. Please see this post for more information. I recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. If you choose to keep these applications, please do not use them until our fixes at WTT are complete.

Hi,

Thanks for the P2P advice - it's my daughter's laptop so I expect there are a few surprises on there. I've removed Vuze but could not find any reference to Limewire. Do you have any further help with that?

I ran the OTL code but noticed a typo in it: C:\winodws\tasks\At*.job

I talked myself out of the temptation to change it and ran it as is.

I don't have the log I'm afraid - I guess I was supposed to save it before rebooting after updating MBAM.

The MBAM scan found and corrected 6 issues. Log starts here:

Si Aldworth:

You were correct - I made an error with that OTL directive. You made the correct call in following the instructions as written though. This will resolve that and remove that old LimeWire folder:

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, it will reboot when it is done and produce a log
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please run ESET Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.

Si Aldworth:

Everything look in order. I have some important housekeeping and cleanup for you to take care of now:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Java™ 6 Update 17 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts. If it does not, let me know.

Once the install is complete…

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Your Adobe reader needs to be updated. Please visit Adobe's site and grab the newest version. Be sure to watch for and uncheck any boxes offering to install other software.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Go HERE to scan for any other out of date and/or vulnerable applications on your computer and follow the instructions given for updating them.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Clean up with OTL:
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
  • Manually delete any remaining logs or tools.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Install an anti-virus program. I don't see any anti-virus software running on your computer. Choose one, (but no more) reputable AV program. If you need help chosing one, this site has good information. Avast, Avira and Microsoft all offer free AV products.

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Finally, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions to help you stay clean in the future:
  • Restart any anti-malware programs that we disabled while we were cleaning your machine.
  • Keep your antivirus application and MBAM current and updated. Scan with them at least weekly.
  • Avoid using P2P programs, cracks and keygens! Refer back to my earlier post for more information.
  • Please carefully review the information in the Security - Best Practices and Prevention forum located HERE
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can close this thread. Good luck and stay safe!
