Symptoms: Available memory is low. Cannot run Windows System Restore. Cannot run Norton Internet Security 2010. Runs Malwarebytes and Superantispyware but won't allow either to update definitions and doesn't find anything on a scan. I tried to deactivate Adobe InDesign and it doesn't allow it. I cannot install updates for Adobe Reader or InDesign. I worked with Symantec about a week on this and they referred me to you.

This is an older HP laptop with 512 mb. This is all it can hold. Task Manager says it has 457 mb total RAM.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
"Bonjour" was not available to remove from Add/Remove Programs. I am still unable to run Norton Internet Security. So far as I can tell nothing has changed. The new HijackThis log after running ATF and reboot is as follows:

To be honest with you with what little RAM you have, I'd uninstall Nortons and use a free Anti-Virus program that doesn't use as much RAM.

We can try MBAM and see if it finds anything.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
  • Then click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".
This is what happened before when I tried to run Malwarebytes - I got the error below when I tried to update it. The scan showed nothing. "An error has occurred. During the ESET scanner initialization, it said "Cannot get update. Is proxy configured?" It can't go beyond this, the only option is BACK. Is malware preventing the initialization? What do you advise?
This computer would not allow me to go to the page to download the Norton Removal Tool. I had to download it to a CD using another computer and transfer it to this computer. Removal of Norton Internet Security and other Norton files went well. After that, ESET updated and scanned fine. The log is below: ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log: OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=1 esets_scanner_update returned -1 esets_gle=1 # version=7 # iexplore.exe=8.00.6001.18702 (longhorn_ie8_rtm(wmbla).090308-0339) # OnlineScanner.ocx=1.0.0.6211 # api_version=3.0.2 # EOSSerial=9863e9130e905c4e8127e1858946c58a # end=finished # remove_checked=true # archives_checked=false # unwanted_checked=true # unsafe_checked=false # antistealth_checked=true # utc_time=2010-11-24 07:09:19 # local_time=2010-11-24 02:09:19 (-0500, Eastern Standard Time) # country="United States" # lang=9 # osver=5.1.2600 NT Service Pack 3 # compatibility_mode=512 16777215 100 0 0 0 0 0 # compatibility_mode=3584 16777215 100 0 0 0 0 0 # compatibility_mode=8192 67108863 100 0 0 0 0 0 # scanned=70854 # found=0 # cleaned=0 # scan_time=2383
I'm not noticing any difference in the way it runs. I guess it's running okay. Available memory is 175 of 457 mb with browser open. Still think that it would not let me go to the page to download the Norton Removal Tool is possibly symptomatic? The new HijackThis log is below:
