if colours are reversed or used more than once they would still produce distinctly different coloured "fields"..
ie there are no 2 or more lines blurred into 1
so when tomk gives the answer don't be surprised when the answer uses 1 colour more than once in a field(just not next to each other) or the patterns are just reversed.
Is 'white, red, green' not the same as 'green, red, white' or can we use 'red, white, red, twice also.
of course white red green is not the same as green red white, do they look the same?? would you confuse them if they were two different nations flags??
now red white red looks exactly like red white red so of course you can't use it twice..

Thankyou Terry1966, Im with u on that one
And sorry, I didnt see your earlier post, I think I basically repeated your answer, just in a longer way
no problems, even tho i wasn't first with the ??? x ?? = ???? puzzles i still had to work it out for myself just for the fun of it and post my answer.
nice to know someone else thinks my second answer is correct too..
If you don't count white as a color, which it technically isn't, than Tomk could come back with any number.
Taking in to account that he may or may not be including colors that are reversed, as they simply are the same color combination.
Good Luck
We are probably ALL wrong
As I said earlier, I think it all comes down to how you interpret the question.
Either way, it was fun!
Thankyou and good luck to you too Jkc73

he asks for colour patterns,
not different colour combinations,
if it was combinations then you'd only be able to use red, green, blue once so the answer would be 1 or if you included white the answer would be 4.
The discussion has been very entertaining and I'm tempted to just let it continue… however, that probably wouldn't be fair to terry1966 who has already deduced that the answer is in fact … 36.
There are in fact 4 colors available to each field. Red, blue, green, and white. (White is in fact a color. It is the ultimate color in that it contains the total spectrum of light. Black is not a color. It is equivalent to dark which is the absence of light.)
must admit the discussion was more fun than working out the solution,
wouldn't of been surprised tho if Jkc73 was right and all my "logic" was completely wrong..
