I'm currently trying to clean up a computer for a friend, wrestled a little bit with a virus or two, finally have Avast installed and running. Nabbed Hijack This, and have something happening I've not seen before.

During the scan, I get this "For some reason your system has denied write access to the hosts file". Attempting to open the hosts file in notepad, as it says, works fine. Saving the file as "hosts" though, is met with a 'cannot create file, make sure that the path and filename are corrrect' error.

Attempting to go to google.com sends me to a different website ( http://sorry.google.com/sorry/?continue=ht…www.google.com/ ) and searching for anything in the search bar at the top right of the IE window gives me results, but from google.nl …

With all of the O1 entries showing up after a few reboots, I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Here's my Hijack log.

Thanks for the help!
Hello niarro and welcome to the WTT forum.

My name is Satchfan and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem. Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:
• Please do not install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
• Please do not run any scans other than those requested
• Please follow all instructions in the order posted
• Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
• If you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
• The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
• Please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
Please note that I am still in training and my replies need to be checked by an expert in order for you to receive the best possible advice. This may result in a small delay between my posts but I shall try to keep this to a minimum.

I am looking through your log now and will reply as soon as possible.

Thanks

Satchfan
Thanks for your replies! Apologies that mine's taken awhile to get here, heh.

A note, I had some issues getting that custom scan text. Clicking on the link provided sends me over http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/app=downloa…__showfile__395 there, but I managed to find it anyways.

Hijack this was run, and everything as was asked.

Hello niarro

There are some things that need to be brought to your attention.

Multiple Antivirus programs

You have multiple antivirus programs on your computer, some of which have not been uninstalled properly. Please remove all except Avast.

To remove them:• Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
• Double-click Add or Remove Programs (it may take time for the list to appear, so be patient)
• Scroll down the list and look for any of the above entries:
• If they are present, click on the program name and then on Remove.

Peer-to-Peer software

P2P - I see you have P2P software, (LimeWire/uTorrent), installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infection. If your computer is infected, it likely contributed to your current situation.

This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P file-sharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Please see this topic for more information:

Perils of P2P File Sharing.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them now. You can do so via Control Panel, Programs, and then Programs and Features.

Should you decide to keep them, please don’t use it until we have finished up here.

Update Java

You have multiple versions of Java that are out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English or the appropriate language…and click on Select.
  • Click Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

C:\Program Files\MumboJumbocjh.,loonhv,hv.cy,xnmgkllbk;;lrt

Please let me know the current situation with your computer.

Hey Satchfan. I am seeing Norton and McAfee showing up in the add/remove programs, but trying to uninstall McAfee, the program asks for a disk which I currently don't have. Also, trying to uninstall Norton doesn't actually bring anything up (no uninstaller runs). I'll also be sure to pass on those warnings about the P2P stuff, heh. Java's been update! Syslook was run, I've attached the .txt. Do you have a preference as to whether or not I copy+paste logs, or attach? When I began the fix in OTL, an error popped up: Could not create (I think it was create, possibly was read) hosts file. I ended up running OTL with the custom fix code pasted once more after the first time, to see if the same error would return, and it did not. I'm assuming the OTL logs you wanted were the .txt files that popped up after the reboot. They're attached as well! (_OTL1 being the first scan, _OTL2 being the second.) It appears that C:\Program Files\MumboJumbocjh.,loonhv,hv.cy,xnmgkllbk;;lrt has some folders belonging to this 'farm frenzy' game. It contains perhaps half the files in the proper C:\Program Files\MumboJumbo\Farm Frenzy folder. Also, where there are typical western names assigned to profile files in the C:\Program Files\MumboJumbo\Farm Frenzy\Data\profiles folder, it seems like it has gibberishly named profile files in the C:\Program Files\MumboJumbocjh.,loonhv,hv.cy,xnmgkllbk;;lrt\Farm Frenzy\Data\profiles folder…. suspicious?
Hello niarro

Do you have a preference as to whether or not I copy+paste logs, or attach?

Please copy and paste. Do not attach logs unless specifically requested to.

Remove any remnants of McAfee• download the utility MCPR
• double-click the file MCPR.exe to run it
• once the process of deleting McAfee products is over (the removal process may take a minute), the McAfee Cleanup window appears.
• click Yes to reboot your computer and to finish the removal process of McAfee products
Remove remnants of NortonClick on the link below to download the Norton Removal Tool

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.j…EN&ln=en_US

Run OTL
• Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button (don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time)
• Post the OTL.txt log it produces in your next reply.
Please post back with the log

Thanks

Satchfan
Hello niarro It has been several days since I sent my last post with instructions to help with your computer problem.. Please let me know if you are having problems and still require help. Thanks Satchfan
Hello, sorry about the delays on my end, it's a bit hard to properly set aside time for the issue here, heh. But I'm taking the steps you mentioned now, will reply soon!
McAfee cleanup tool was run.

Wasn't able to find a Norton Removal Tool created specifically for Norton PC Checkup. Also came across someone else having an issue removing this program, with a virus that infected his uninstall. Looks like my 'uninstall' shortcut points over towards some 'InstStub.exe' file, all on its own in a folder seperate from the actual norton pc checkup folder. (EXE is in C:\Program Files\NortonInstaller\… )

    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL log (don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time)

Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

Click here• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

**Vista users - right click on the IE icon and run as administrator

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Please tell me how the computer is running and include the following logs:

OTL.txt
Mbam.txt
Kaspersky log

Thanks

So that scan was not run. However, it seems like the redirects were successfully taken care of, I can search google.com without being redirected to google.nl (And none are showing in O1). Beyond that, everything appears to be fine, unless of course you see something in the logs presented here.
Hi niarro

I’m pleased that your computer seems to be OK but I’d like to see a new OTL log as well as an online scan.

Run OTL
• Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button (don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time)
• Post the OTL.txt log it produces in your next reply.
Please post back with the log

unfortunately, the computer seems to be running the x86 version of windows, which Kapersky said was incompatible with its online scan (which was designed for x32).

The x86 version and x32 are the same 32-bit versions of Windows so there shouldn’t be a problem.

If the Kaspersky scan started previously, it won’t let you run another scan until you have deleted the old ActiveX download component. The easiest way to solve this is to close your browser and uninstall the program via Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. When you have removed/uninstalled it, try running it again.

If it didn’t even start the scan the last time, try it again.

If it still doesn’t work, try the one below instead.

Run ESET Online Scan

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan 1. Click the Eset online Scanner button.
2. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

• Click on esetinstaller.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
• Double click on the Eset installer icon on your desktop.

3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
4. Click the Start button.
5. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
6. Check Scan archives
7. Push the Start button.
8. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
9. When the scan completes, push List of found threats
10. Push Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
11. Push the back button.
12. Push Finish
If a log has been produced post it in your next reply.

Please include OTL.txt as well as the scan result.
