Thanks so much, ken545, for reopening the thread! Satchfan, Once again, thanks for your previous assistance and for any assistance you'll be providing in the future! This morning, we set about running the scans we normally run to check out the computer, and after SpyBot turned back no threats, we ran a SUPERAntiSpyware quickscan, which turned back an instance of Malware.Trace within the registry. I quarantined and left it within the SUPERAntiSpyware's quarantine and requested this thread to be reopened. As I am currently on our other laptop, I can't provide an exact location as to where it was within the registry. How would you like me to proceed?
Hi mediaklepto

This could be a “false positive” but we’ll run a quick scan to be sure.

Please can you locate the quarantined file and include the information in your next post.

You can access quarantined files by clicking the Manage Quarantine button on the SUPERAntiSpyware main menu.

Run DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply

All righty, Satchfan, I've done everything as you requested. Very quickly though, I would like to mention something before moving on, in regards to the computer's performance, to get your opinion.

After installing the ZoneAlarm Free firewall on both XP laptops, I discovered that while the other machine takes just a moment to get past the blue welcome screen and sits on its background for just a minute or so before loading the start bar and icons, this one takes a little longer to pass the welcome screen, and sits on its background for between 2-5 minutes, depending on how gracious it seems to be feeling. I looked around online and discovered that this does occasionally happen after installing ZoneAlarm. I was just wondering if you have any opinions to add to what I might be able to do to resolve it, if it's actually a problem.

Now then, moving on with your instructions, I have gathered the file from SUPERAntiSpyware's quarantine. As the location was extremely long, I took a screenshot of it, as to not even allow myself the chance of mistyping anything. As I said, SUPER came back with a positive on this registry entry of "Malware.Trace".

Below are the two DDS logs as you requested, starting with DDS.txt. I'll be awaiting any further instructions, and thank you as always.

Hi mediaklepto

Which computer takes time loading the desktop icons and taskbar: is it the one that SAS reported malware traces on?

I found nothing in your log that suggests the presence of anything untoward but we’ll check more just to be sure.

Download and run ComboFix

Download ComboFix from the following location:

Link

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

    [external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    [external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
Note: Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it will produce a log. Please include the ComboFix.txt in your next reply. It can be found at C:\ComboFix.txt

Satchfan
Satchfan, Sorry I'm a day late getting back to this, we've been busy with last minute Christmas shopping and what-have-you. Also, sorry for the poor wording, upon re-reading what I posted I realized that I really didn't say which computer has the slow load problem. It IS the same computer that we're working on right now, yes. In addition, the Microsoft Recovery Console timer at start-up on said computer still has a 30 second countdown instead of the 3 second one on the other laptop. Anyway, I'm going to run ComboFix as soon as I log out here. Thanks again for all your help.
Satchfan,

Here's the Combofix.txt log as you requested.

One thing I want to point out - when Combofix was finishing up, it restarted the computer. Upon restart, Combofix attempted to automatically reconnect to the internet, which brought up our LinkSys wireless connection window, which takes up the whole screen. A few moments later, a security pop-up informed me that "PEV.cfxxe" was attempting to connect to the internet. Not sure what it was, I opened Internet Explorer for more info. Everything I found said it was one of Combofix's files, so I allowed it to connect. I closed Internet Explorer and the LinkSys window, only to find out that behind the Linksys window, one of Combofix's instructions were "please do not open any other programs until Combofix finishes", which I did do with IE. However, Combofix didn't report any trouble due to other programs, and finished and produced the log as you said it would.

In any case here's the log, if you need anything further, I'll await your instruction.

Thanks again for your continued assistance.

Just trying to keep this post alive during the holiday season, I in no way expected a reply at this point, especially being that it's Christmas Day for all those who celebrate!
Hello mediaklepto

My sincere apologies for the fact that this post didn't reach you when I originally sent it, (Dec 22nd). I can only think that my Internet connection failed when I sent it and that I then closed the computer down without realising that it hadn't gone.

I hope you all had a good holiday.

the Microsoft Recovery Console timer at start-up on said computer still has a 30 second countdown

I’m not sure what you mean by “Microsoft Recovery Console timer”: do you mean the multiboot options menu? If this is what you mean, this screen shouldn’t appear unless Windows closed down abnormally or if you have more than one operating system installed. The default time for this window to remain open is 30 seconds but can be different if the setting has been changed. However, it is not likely that malware would change the timings, it would simply disable the option altogether.

The good news from your ComboFix log is that there is still no sign of infection but we can do a final online scan to be certain.

Remove any remnants of McAfee

You appear to have previously used McAfee. You can run this removal tool from McAfee that will remove all remnants of that program. • download the utility MCPR
• double-click the file MCPR.exe to run it
• once the process of deleting McAfee products is over (the removal process may take a minute), the McAfee Cleanup window appears.
• click Yes to reboot your computer and to finish the removal process of McAfee products

Run ESET Online Scan

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan 1. Click the Eset online Scanner button.
2. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

• Click on esetinstaller.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
• Double click on the Eset installer icon on your desktop.

3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
4. Click the Start button.
5. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
6. Check Scan archives
7. Push the Start button.
8. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
9. When the scan completes, push List of found threats
10. Push Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
11. Push the back button.
12. Push Finish
If a log has been produced post it in your next reply.

Please also let me know how your computer is behaving generally and if there are any problems.

Satchfan
Thank you, Satchfan, for getting back to us. It's no big deal that the post seemed to have gone AWOL on you on your first attempt! Getting any help at all for this issue is great appreciated, and with the holidays rolling around, I just figured you were on about your own things, and it didn't bother me one bit!

We did have a good holiday, thanks. I hope the same was true for you.

To tell you the truth, I'm not entirely sure. Upon starting both of the computers which have the recovery console installed, there is a DOS-like window (all black with grey-white text) which asks whether to boot in the recovery console, or to start normally. This has happened on every startup on both machines since installing the recovery console, the only difference between them being that one counts down your time to choose an option from 3 seconds, and the other from 30 (the latter being the computer which is/was infected).

The good news from your ComboFix log is that there is still no sign of infection but we can do a final online scan to be certain.

Thank goodness for that, at least! Here's to hoping!

You appear to have previously used McAfee. You can run this removal tool from McAfee that will remove all remnants of that program.

That stupid thing is still there?? Oh for the love of all things Hank and Henry, this will be the third time I've run the removal tool! This thing is driving me crazy, and I'm simply getting tired of re-removing it. After I have run the removal this next time, is there any way I could find out if it's STILL hanging around? Perhaps run another scan that you could look at, and see if the stupid thing is finally gone?

I'll get on with the ESET scan sometime over the next few days. I don't think I've yet to remove the online scanner we used previously under your direction, as I was intending on doing so after I finished the scans the day that one of them produced the report of the Malware.Trace infection. I'll have to see if my husband uninstalled it without my knowledge.

Please also let me know how your computer is behaving generally and if there are any problems

I was using the computer every day for about a week and a half before I ran the scans which showed the infection. It seemed to be acting just fine as far as the internet and whatnot, but I do have a quick question about ZoneAlarm's firewall on THIS computer, if you don't mind?

A couple of days ago, we got a little notice from ZoneAlarm's free firewall with a message telling us that, basically, it was doing its job. It had stopped 75 unauthorized attempts to access the computer, and had updated numerous times (I forget how many, honestly). Is this a normal notice to get, and a normal number of things to have been blocked? I believe the notice appeared, more or less, around a month after installing the firewall.

Thanks once again for your continued assistance, and I hope you have a wonderful ringing-in of 2011!
Hello mediaklepto

Re ZoneAlarm

Yes, these notices are quite normal and the number of “unauthorized attempts” blocked will vary, depending on Internet usage. There is nothing to worry about there.

Run AppRemover

Vista users, right click on the icon and select "run as administrator"

Let’s try this to remove McAfee.

Please download AppRemover and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on AppRemover.exe to run it.
  • Uncheck "Enable anonymous usage statistics. No personal data will be recorded."
  • Click on the Next button.
  • Click on "Remove Security Application" or "Clean Up a Failed Uninstall" depending on what you want to do. (you want the failed uninstall)
  • Click on the Next button.
  • A scan begins, please wait. Once done, click on the Next button.
  • Now you should have a list of your installed programs, choose McAfee and click on the Next button.
  • Follow the last step and reboot if asked to do so.
Please run the ESET scan and let me know the outcome

Thanks

Satchfan
Hello mediaklepto It has been several days since I asked you to follow some steps to help diagnose your computer problems. Please let me know if you still require help. Thanks Satchfan
Satchfan, I ran the AppRemover, and it turned up no results whatsoever, least of all McAfee. Out of curiousity, I searched the computer for files with McAfee in the name. It found a 6.14kb folder containing a few tiny files, could this be what the scans turned up? Also, in regards to the 30-second timer running when the computer started up, it no longer waits 30 seconds, and under "Start Recovery Console" it has a line saying "do not do this (debugger enabled)". To the best of my knowledge, I don't have any debuggers running? Realizing I had forgotten to remove ESET from my previous usage, I did so per your previous instructions, and am now re-downloading, updating and preparing to run ESET. I'll post back with the log (if any).
