Hello, I ran Housecall online scaner last night to see what I had that was causing my AVG 9.0 program to be disabled. All aspects of this program have stopped working. I also noticed that I can not do a system recovery on any dates. Here is what Housecall told me it found and fixed: catchme.exe TROJ Generic.ADV Trojan NirCmd.exe HKTL NIRCMD Spyware ASR_72~1.EXE WORM KOLABC.GB Trojan When I try to disconnect from my dialup internet it will not allow me to. I have to shut down the computer. Can someone please help guide me thru some troubleshooting with your neat tools. Last time I had problems was back in 2007 when I was registered under my old username: wd4ngi. I could not find my password nor do I have the former associated e-mail account with that username. Your help greatly appreciated! Respectfully, Tom
Hi

Please do the following:

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A window will open on your desktop
  • if an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file.

It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"
Hello CatByte,

Thanks for your quick responce. I had no problems downloading and running the applications you recommended and I have saved the logs and will post them to the end of this paragraph. I wanted to give you a little more input at this time. I keep my computer off unless I need it. I downloaded the files on another computer and brought them over to the infected computer with a thumb drive. I notice when my computer started up and settled down that a new program appeared and opened without my permission. This program was called "Narrator" It actually spoke to me. I simply closed it. What do you suppose this is?

Okay, here are those log files. I await your next instruction. It might be tomorrow or Saturday before my next posting. I have a lot of other things going on here. Hope to hear from you soon.

God Bless,

Thomas

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
Hello CatByte,

I just finished running ComboFix. When I tried shutting off AVG in the system tray there was no selection for disabling it. It is simply not there. :pullhair: Some of the other features are grayed out. I had to go into MSCONFIG and uncheck this item in the startup tab. That got rid of the AVG icon in the system tray when I rebooted but ComboFix still recognized the fact that it was still running although I had turned it off so I don't know what to say about that. Something has my AVG firewall and AV program all messed up. Maybe this report can shed some light on what is causing this. Here now is the log file. Thanks for your assistance in resolving my problems.

Thomas :popcorn:

Hi

Please do the following:

submit a file to virustotal for analysis
  • Use the browse button on that page to navigate to the location of the file to be scanned.
  • In the right hand panel,
  • click on the file c:\windows\system32\asr_24365.exe
  • then click the open button.
  • The file will now be displayed in the submit box.
  • Scroll down a bit and click "send file", wait for the results
  • If you get a message saying File has already been analyzed: click Reanalyze file now
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the link to the results page in your next reply.

NEXT

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
Hi CatByte,

I didn't get very far this time. Let me explain… That file called "asr_24365.exe" located at c:\windows\system32\asr_24365.exe apparently was in use and would not allow me to access it to send it to "VirusTotal". I even tried a couple of browsers: IE and Firefox to no avail. I got the idea to copy it and put on a thumbdirve to send from my laptop to them. It would still not allow me to copy it. I simply shut down the computer and rebooted in safe mode and I had success in copying it to my thumb drive. I then took it to my laptop and tried sending it to http://www.virustotal.com/

When I hit send here is what I discovered with my AVG on the laptop:

[external image: Posted Image]

So as you can see, this file contains a Trojan Horse. I quarantined it. I waited around for the results from "VirusTotal" but it never showed up. I went to part 2 of your last response and downloaded the file: mbam-setup-1.46.exe

I will not install it until I hear further instructions about what I'm supposed to do with "VirusTotal". Apparently my AVG over on the infected computer is not working. I have no virus protection over there and that concerns me.

Awaiting to hear from you,

Tom
OK

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=115250&view=findpost&p=691529

Collect::
c:\windows\system32\asr_24365.exe

RegLockDel::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{0992D064-A13E-4C28-911B-A76E6FEE9270}]

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Hello again,

This will be my last posting for tonight. I accomplished the task you suggested. I also submitted the zipped file to Bleeping Computer for anlysis as part of ComboFix's final thing before it shut down. Here now is the log file you requested.

Thanks,
Tom

Roger roger, will do! Just wanted to let you know there are still 2 items that I believe were associated with that last file that was infected, namely: asr_luziw and asr_qsaoz, see screen shot below. Also, notice that my AVG is still not working and I am getting the "Red shield" notice in the system tray. The ComboFix program showed the following:

AV: AVG Internet Security *On-access scanning enabled* (Outdated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}
FW: AVG Firewall *enabled* {8decf618-9569-4340-b34a-d78d28969b66}

I have no way of turning these on or off that I am now aware of. I beleive the "Red shield" notice is some sort of trick by a spyware program. We will soon find out I suppose when I do the other scans from Malwarebytes and Kaspersky. One more comment, I noticed that Kaspersky online scanner was down a few days ago. They had posted a message about it being down. That is why I went to Housecall online scanner the other day.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi

The link I supplied for Kaspersky will work

and we'll take care of those other two files as well

please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=115250

Collect::
c:\windows\system32\asr_luziw
c:\windows\system32\asr_qsaoz

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";

This is taking some time because I am on dialup at 26.8KBS, slow I know but I live in the country. Anyway after a couple of tries of leaving Kaspersky running all night it does not complete the update and crashes. I am doing this again now. Here is the screenshot showing the percentage as of a few minutes ago:

By the way, I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46 last night and here is the log:

Prior to re-loading the page at Kaspersky here are some screenshots of the problems I encountered:

I will continue to try to get these updates in and run the scan. If it crashes again I suppose I'll have to give up. One thing I keep forgetting to ask you is: Do I need to have my Windows XP System Restore turned off? I still have it on. Wouldn't the viruses keep returning?? More next time CatByte.

Tom
No,

System restore should never be turned off.

An infected restore point is better than none at all.

I didn't realize you were on dial up

try this scanner instead:

Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activeX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.
Hi, Kaspersky got to 35 % and I got disconnected from internet again. Thanks for info on other webscanner from ESET. I went there and had a successful scan!
