Hi people, bit of a last resort before a new clean install of xp,heres the symptoms, avast pop ups blocking sys 32/svchost.exe and pop ups when browsing (IE and FOX) blocking redirects, also boot up problems, sometimes half a dozen boots (normal and safe) to get to desktop, freezing up,mouse freezes, system restore saying the usual "no changes have been made" etc. Has anyone encountered this, obviously its an altered system file causing chaos, all scans and such coming are up clean. Any help grately apprieciated before resorting to a wipe and start again, which of course is time consuming to get all things back, working and re-installed.
Lets give it a try

Please do the following.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under Custom Scan paste this in

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
  • You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

If GMER won't run try with devices unchecked. If still no go try in safe mode.

In your next reply please post the following.

You have run Combofix, please post the log found at c:\combofix.txt

Try this rootkit scanner instead of GMER

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it on your desktop.
  • Disable your security programs
  • Double click RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers and Stealth Code,
  • Uncheck the rest, then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished then go File > Save Report
  • Save the report somewhere you can find it. Click Close
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.
Note - You may get this warning, it is ok, just ignore it:

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Yes,i tried combofix,it downloaded recovery console, detected rootkit activity and asked me to reboot, causing system to freeze,it didn't finish therefore there's no log, tried it again with same result, will try your suggested prog and post log later today, thanks again.
Hi again, here's the report… interestingly,my system booted ok and seems stable today,no popup warnings etc, could this be a result of the various scans being run ? Delete the copy of Combofix you have and download a fresh one, then follow the instructions to rename it before running it

Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it to combo.com before saving it.
Save it to your desktop. Change the save as file type to "all files"

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, delete it, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
  • Tools->Options->Main tab
  • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

Link 1
Link 2

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

  • NOTE: If ComboFix asks to install the Recovery Console, please ALLOW it to do so.
  • Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.
Thanks again….deleted combofix, downloaded and renamed fresh one, disabled avast and spyware terminator and windows firewall, ran remaned combofix but again had total freeze after a few mins of the scan :smack: :( wasnt sure about the script blocking or is that disabled with the antivirus ?
Try once more to run Combofix, this time in safe mode To do this Restart the computer As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8. Use the arrow keys to highlight the safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
No joy in safe mode either,….F8 has become an old friend :D identical freeze after a few mins, just wont scan to completion, strange as 1st time i ran it it went ok until it asked to reboot ,and thats when sys was at its worst..
Please download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
    • Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
    • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
    • A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)
Many thanks, it found 6 threats,and offered ignore,quarantine or delete options…quarantined them,should i have deleted ?
