Hi, My computer isnt giving many signs of a virus or spyware other than a couple random pop ups yesterday. Today I tried to open AMW, Spybot, Adaware, and even downloaded combofix and none would open, even in safe mode. I checked hijack this and there is nothing new or changed from previous runs. Thoughts?
Hi

Please do the following:

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A window will open on your desktop
  • if an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
Combofix won't load. I downloaded it from both links. This was part of the original problem that lead me to believe there was something malicious on my comp. Suggestions? Thanks, Jay
do you have access to another computer where you can download it to a USB then run it from the USB?

when you say it wont load, do you mean that you can't save it from your computer or you can save it, but when you try and run it, nothing happens?

If that is the case, delete the copy you have on your desktop and download a fresh copy but rename it to svchost.exe before saving it and try it again
Yes, when I try to run it nothing happens. I saved as the svchost.exe and that worked, very smart! I will let you know how it goes. Thanks, Jay

OK

that is the only one on the machine and it's infected, so we need to get a replacement

Do you have your installation disk or access to another machine with the exact same OS as this one where we can get it from?

If not

download Service Pack 3

you will need to upgrade to that anyway as SP2 is no longer supported.

download SP3 to your desktop (don't install it just yet, till you advise me if you have access to that file elsewhere)

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers
I want to replace that infected file first, so that there is more chance of a successful installation of SP3

please do the following:

If you didn't download the installer directly to the C:\ drive, please move it there

Double click the installer and it will begin extracting it's files. (Note the folder it extracts to- it will be an alph-numeric named folder)

Once fully extracted, leave the setup screen sit, then browse to the folder the package extracted to.

The files will be in the i386 subfolder of the alpha-numeric folder, and they are compressed.

NEXT

Locate termdd.sy_ > right click the file > copy > then paste it into your c:\ drive

Next, please do the following:

Go to start > run type cmd OK

this will open a command window:

please copy/paste the following into the command window:

expand -r c:\termdd.sy_ c:\windows\system32\dllcache\termdd.sys

you should get a message "expanded to {xxxxxx} bytes, {xx}% increase"

type exit to leave the command window.

If the message is successful, then go ahead and continue with the installation of SP3

let me know how that goes
