Over the last 3 days windows locks up intermittently. Either screens go black or display freezes. No mouse or ctrl-alt-del. I have to pull plug and restart… which seems normal. I recently upgraded to Norton 360 and have done the usual software updates…
Any experienced eyes reviewing the log below would be appreciated. I have a lot of software so the log is large.
Thank you, Paul2010

Hi Paul2010,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I'm not seeing anything there. Let's try a couple simple scans.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk, Thank you for your help. I have followed your directions exactly. • Ran TFC with reboot • Ran Malwarebytes with reboot. I use a Norton 360 app to delay the boot of unnecessary programs so the load is pretty quick. • I almost always get Notification from Norton 360 that says… The idle time scan has found and fixed threats. For more information, click View Details • For the past number of days I get the computer to freeze; usually when it has been idle for a time. The only way out is to pull the plug…. so… • I pull the plug and reboot. • I did get one blue screen: ??? Nel_Stack_Inpage_Error Stop 0x00000077 (0xc0000185, oxc0000185,oxoooooooo,oxoo55A000) • If I pull the plug, my screen display changes to a white on the reboot and I get: The Active Desk Top Changes and I go to a white screen that includes Active Desktop Recovery info on how to fix the screen. I have four monitors and when I fix the Active Desk Top my Primary screen does not completely load no matter what background I load. 3/4 of the right side of the screen is still white. • I have changed no hardware, but, I do have external hard drives, iphone, and camera, that I attach at times. Perhaps the malware scan and fix that you suggested caught something… but I am starting to believe there is a software conflict with all the windows, Microsoft office, and Norton360 updates. Perhaps the background scans when the machine is idle is causing the lockup. I will monitor the machine and see if I get a freeze today while I await your reply. Thank you again. Sincerely, Paul
Paul2010,

That does sound a bit like a hardware problem, but I believe that that Kernel stack error can refer to a disk error or a MBR infection.

Let's give this a try:

Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Be sure to disable your security programs
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A window will open on your desktop
  • if an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file.

Paul2010,

The good news is I'm not seeing any sign of an MBR infection. Let's get an online scan to make sure we've gotten all of the malware…

Please note that this scan will take several hours… often it is best to let it run while you sleep.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Hi Tomk! I have turned off anti virus norton360, spybot, etc… and tryied to run Kaspersky. I keep getting this message! Launch of the Java application is interrupted! Please establish an uninterrupted Internet connection for work with this program! I have a high speed cox cable broadband connection. I do not understand the disruption. Any ideas? The cpu has not crashed again so far… :) Thank you, Paul
Paul2010,

Hmm…. let's take a step back and run a different tool.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Paul2010, You have an infected emails. Unfortunately I cannot tell which one or ones it is. What I need you to do is go through all of your email in your in box, sent box, and any other saved boxes you may have. Please delete any that you don't want/need/recognize. Odds are that the infected emails will have an attachment or at least a link. Therefore, do not open any attachments or click on any links. Once you've been through all of the emails, please empty your deleted email box. With that done, unless you are still having issues, that brings us to the end of this sojourn. Please post me a final DDS log and let me know how things seem on your end. If all is good, we'll do some housekeeping and let you get on with your life. :D
