Thanks in advance. This is my son's computer and the pasted text files were run in safemode with networking as I cannot access your site when not in safemode. Initially he came to me and the computer would not access the internet, something had changed the proxy settings to require a proxy. I changed them back to no proxy required and was able to access the internet. All attempts to get past a homepage result in a redirect and when not in safemode, several pop ups as well. This happens both with firefox and IE. I performed the items you have listed in the post "google Redirected" After that did not work, I attempted to restore the computer from an earlier time. The restoration date was 6/4/2010. The restore worked but it didn't solve the problem. Still getting hijacked when not in safemode. Hello and welcome to WhatTheTech. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted.
  • Any underlined text in my posts indicates a clickable link.
  • You should print any instructions I give you for ease of use and reference.
  • If you have any questions at all, please stop and ask before proceeding.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it on your desktop.
  • Disable your security programs
  • Double click RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth Code, Files, and Code Hooks
  • Uncheck the rest, then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished then go File > Save Report
  • Save the report somewhere you can find it. Click Close
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.
Note - You may get this warning it is ok, just ignore it:

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

  • Rootkit Unhooker log
Thanks again for the Help. I'm still only able to get here in safemode, but I ran the rootkit unhooker in normal mode. The file is very long but your instructions say to paste it here so here it is. Says the post is too long with the paste so i'm attaching the log as a text file I had run trendmicro's house call on the machine while in safemode between my original post and your reply but nothing else. Thanks

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report… at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report… button.
  • Change the Files of type dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasReport.txt to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

  • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM and reboot your PC.
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

I may have screwed this up. The first time i ran it, the OTL was "not responding" after the move. I wasn't able to copy the entries. I rebooted and started it again but there were a lot fewer things listed in the green window. Here is the log from the second time, the first log doesn't appear to be available. Can you help me get rid of the trend micro internet security program that keeps running at start up and asking me to update? Also acrobat is asking to be updated which I haven't allowed it to do yet. It appears that OTM did what I needed it to, despite the issue with the logs. I don't recommend removing your Trend-Micro Internet Security application unless you plan on replacing it with another antivirus program. If that is the case, it can be uninstalled following the instructions in this link: Trend-Micro Uninstaller. Your logs look good, so you can let the other updates apply as well.

All I have left for you to do is some very important cleanup:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Uninstall ComboFix
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard or click Start -> Run. Copy and past the following text into the run box that opens and press OK:
    Combofix /Uninstall
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Delete the following tools along with any other logs you saved from our work:
  • DDS
  • Rootkit Unhooker
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Finally, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions to help you stay clean in the future:
  • Restart any anti-malware programs that we disabled while we were cleaning your machine.
  • Keep your antivirus application current and updated. Also, hang on to MBAM. Scan with them at least weekly.
  • Please carefully review the information in the Security - Best Practices and Prevention forum located HERE
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can close this thread. Good luck and stay safe!
Computer is running great. I downloaded avg and pctools firewall, hopefully that will keep my son out of trouble. Next I'm going to post to try to clean up my windows 7 machine. Thanks again for all the help.
