Hi,

My AV software found these 2 infections that I didn't have an option to clean or delete. I need help removing them. I use NOD 32 for my AV it does update as usual, however when I try to go to the US site I get a page not available error and the same error when I try to go to the Malwarebytes site. I found these infections doing an in depth analysis with my AV, but during a normal scan I find no infections. My Hijack this file is below

Thanks in advance.

Hi, welcome to the WTT Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to help you with your malware issues. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Please do not run any scans or fixes without my direction.
  • Finally, stay with this topic until I give you the final 'All clear' post.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to sherm.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

==================================

Disable NOD32's active protection, then double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

Let me know if the infection prevents you from accessing the download… we'll tackle that issue if it arises. :)
You guys are the best, I followed the instructions as you laid out and here are the scan results,

1) Combofix
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\zllictbl.dat

SkipFix::

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as sherm.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into sherm.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Great. :) This next scan will take a fairly long time, I suggest start it and leave it overnight…

Please do a scan with the Kaspersky Online Scanner

  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
    files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a long time, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report

To obtain the report:
  • Click on Save Report As
  • In the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
  • In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select Text file [*.txt]
  • Click Save

(Note for Internet Explorer users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)

Kaspersky identified some possible viruses in your email - the only way to really cure this is to delete your whole mailbox, which isn't practical, so keep an eye out for anything suspicious. :)

Otherwise it's looking all good now! Still experiencing any issues?

Please download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Thanks Raktor, I really appreciate your help with this. As for the Email issue are you suggesting that I delete all the old emails that I have, as I could do that with out too much problem. I was thinking of getting the paid version of Malwarebytes and Super anti spyware and have them both running like my current AV. Would you recommend that strategy? As well as upgrading the AV to NOD32, the newest version with the AV antispyware and the firewall all in one product? I didn't know if this would conflict. As for the issues first reported they are fixed. No more popups and blank pages behind the current one and no more redirects. Thanks again for your help. You guys are the best!!!! :notworthy: sherm
Sherm,

Paid for MBAM is a very good idea - that along with a security suite would be perfect. I wouldn't bother with Super AntiSpyware too though.

Email wise - just be careful. No need to go deleting old messages, but be aware that there's probably a virus lurking somewhere in there, I'm sure you're smart enough not to open unknown attachments.

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run… command.
  • Now type in Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. (Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image)
  • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • You will then recieve a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.

How to reduce your chances of infection in the future

Web Browsers
Internet Explorer does come pre-installed with all Windows machines - but this doesn't necessarily mean you have to use it! Because it is the most widely used browser, it is targeted by more malware writers, making you more susceptible to infection. There are many other free alternatives out there that offer better security, take one of these for a spin and see if it takes your fancy.
Mozilla Firefox
Google Chrome
Opera

WOT - Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
Green to go
Yellow for caution
Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

If you would prefer to keep using Internet Explorer, follow these additional steps to make the browser more secure.
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Additional Security Measures
Keep your software up-to-date - You should be manually performing updates of your software once a week to ensure that you are current with anti-virus definitions and patched for any security vulnerabilities. This does not just apply to your anti-virus/anti-malware software; malware authors rely on exploiting commonly used software such as Java and Adobe Reader, which need to be kept up to date as well.

Keep Windows up-to-date - Use Windows Update regularly to stay current with security patches and service packs.

MVPS Hosts File - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.

Firewalls - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient - but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

What Not To Do
The Perils of P2P File Sharing - Even if a P2P application is on the 'safe' list, malware can still be downloaded through infected files - executables, zip files and even MP3s. It is just not worth the risk.

Fake Security/Optimization Software - Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

How to prevent Malware - I strongly recommend that you read Miekiemoses' good advice

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.
Thanks Matt, For all the great tips. I already use Mozilla because of all the security issues with MS, and I will check out the other things like the WOT stuff as that sounds good as well. Thanks again, Sherm :woot:
