Hello everyone, it has been very long time since I have been here, but I need you help again. It was only just yesterday I ran a scan with SuperAnti-spywre and found a Trojan.Agent/Gen-zbot in the System Volume Information folder which I know cannot do any harm to my computer unless it had been restored by system restore. However , I read up about this Trojan and realized that it could compromise my computer. Therefore if this Trojan was on my system (before) being put in the system volume information folder (restore point) I wanted to make sure it didn't (or if it did) any harm on my computer while it was active. I haven't had any problems however and nothing weird had shown up as if I knew about the infection beforehand before this infection.

Anyway here is th HijackThis log n the log from SuperAnt-Spyware with the infecte file. thank you.

• Please do not install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
• Please do not run any scans other than those requested
• Please follow all instructions in the order posted
• Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
• If you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
• The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
• Please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
Please note that I am still in training and my replies need to be checked by an expert in order for you to receive the best possible advice. This may result in a small delay between my posts but I shall try to keep this to a minimum.

I am looking through your log now and will reply as soon as possible.

Gmer.txt

Thanks

Satchfan
OK, first of all I want to say thank you for your help, it's much appreciated, however I did have problems with gimer which I would address after I address with the other two instructions.

1. OTL went fine and smoothly so no problem there

2. DeFogger ran as instructed but did not asked me to reboot the computer so I manually reboot it myself and the defogger_disable log appeared on my desktop which I would post after I talk about the last instructions, including with all of the other logs.

Finally 3. With Gimer was probably the most difficult. The first time I ran it, nothing appeared with these instructions:

If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

The program ran fine however and when it was finished I clicked the save button, only for it to freeze my computer up, I had to do a hard reboot.

The second time I did it the same exact thing happened only this time it froze while it was scanning. So I cannot produce a log for you with gimer.

Anyway here is all the other logs and thank you once again.

Hi Angel of the Moon

The issue you mentioned is probably a remnant of a previous infection which will be removed when we tidy up. Apart from that, I don’t see any problems in your log, but let's just be thorough and run a couple more scans.

Run OTL

  • Double click on the icon to run it.
  • Copy/paste ALL the following text written inside the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL log (don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time)

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Try running Gmer again and un-check devices. Ideally, we'd like to run GMER in normal mode, but if it still won't run in normal mode please do the following:

Boot your computer in Safe Mode• Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
• Start tapping the F8 key.
• The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears (If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again)
• Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu option.
• Press Enter.
• The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
• Log into your usual account
Then try running GMER with just sections and the C: drive checked, leave everything else blank. After running it, reboot into normal mode.

If you still can't get it to run, please let me know.

Please include the OTL, MBAM and Gmer logs in your next post

Thanks

Satchfan
OK Satchfan, I ran everything and it ran smoothly, although I have to admit I had trouble with gmer again until a did it in safe mode and it ran as normal. Although there was nothing detected my gmer I would need to attach the log since I can't really post a log with gmer if nothing was there and you wanted to see the log. Thank you, Angel of the Moon, here are the logs you requested. Edit: I can't attach the log either I am afraid since, I get an error message that I haven't select a file to attach, even though I actually select a file. So how do you want me to give you the gmer.txt? As you are having a problem with Gmer, we'll try another.

Please download RootRepeal to your desktop.• Physically disconnect your machine from the internet as your system will be unprotected.
• Unzip it to it's own folder, close all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) and run RootRepeal.exe
• Click the Report tab at the bottom and then the Scan button.
• A box will pop up, check the boxes beside Drivers, Files, Processes SSDT and click OK.
• Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg: C:\ , then click OK.
• The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
• Once it is done, click the Save Report button, call it RepealScan and save the log to your desktop.
• Reconnect to the internet
• Post the log here in your reply.
Satchfan
Alright, now I feel really bad right now, but the scan crashed as it went to the processes part of the scan, everything else was great but, gave me a warning and closed down, so I couldn't finish. I don't know if you want the crash report, but if you do here it is. ROOTREPEAL CRASH REPORT ————————- Windows Version: Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3 Exception Code: 0xc0000005 Exception Address: 0x76bf3a76 Attempt to read from address: 0x76bf3a76 I'll be waiting for further instructions
Hi Angel of the Moon

Is your CD emulation software still disabled or did you enable it again with DeFogger? If so, please disable it again.

Whether or not you re-enabled it, please do the following:

Disable Windows Media Center Receiver Service • Click Start
• Select Adminastrative Tools
• Select Services
• From the “Name” column, double click Media Center Receiver Service
• From the Startup type drop down list, select Disabled
• Click Apply
• Click OK
• Close the Services window
Temporarily disable your anti-virus and real-time anti-spyware protection.

Scan With RKUnHooker• Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop
• Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it
• Click the Report tab, then click Scan
• Check (tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK
• Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report
• Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning:

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

It is ok, just ignore it

Thanks

Satchfan
Actually no Satchfan, I did not enable the CD emulation with Defrogger, I never even touch Defrogger since the first time you told me to run it. Anyway I did everything you said in the post and here is the log you requested (no problem) with the program, but from your link it was rar file so I needed to download and install win rar to open the file. It is always a good idea to get things checked out by an expert and I would say that we’ve checked everything out pretty thoroughly here and you can be confident that we have purged the bad entry that you were concerned about and everything seems to be good.

We just need to tidy up a bit.

Delete RootRepeal from your desktop.

Uninstall OTL
• Double-click OTL.exe
• Click the CleanUp! button.
• Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? prompt appears.
• If you are prompted to reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
• The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
NOTE: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTL attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Re-enable Emulation drivers

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

It’s good that you check back with us when you have a doubt as there are very many new infections around and they are becoming more dangerous, so when in doubt, please continue to do so.

Satchfan
Thank you very much once again Satchfan, I always like to check with an expert so that is why, I came here in the first place, just to check. ^_^ . I did everything you said, but when I ran the cleanup from OTL it cleaned up DeFrogger as well, so I had to download it back in and it produce me a log so as per your instructions I would post it. The DeFrogger didn't ask me to reboot in case you ae wondering about that. Also for the rest of the applications that didn't get cleaned up by OTL, can I just delete into the recycle bin? Thank you, Angel of the Moon defogger_enable by jpshortstuff (23.02.10.1) Log created at 07:59 on 01/10/2010 (Owner) Parsing file… -=E.O.F=-
Angel of the Moon OTL Cleanup doesn’t “clean up” DeFogger so I don’t know what happened there. However, you have re-enabled so that’s OK. As far as the other tools are concerned, yes you can delete HJT and RKUnhooker. Malwarebytes you very wisely already had on your system and is an excellent tool. I would imagine I don’t have to tell you that it should be updated and run regularly. Regards Satchfan
Alright, thank you very much, I don't know why OTL cleaned up DeFrogger either but knowing everything is now OK, I will delete the remaining tools and logs that was created. Also…no you don't have to tell me to run and/or update Malwrebytes regularly since, I've been updating Malarebytes every morning and doing a scan every week. Anyway; my computer is not having any problems right now but I will if something arises. Thank you again and good luck with your completion of your class at What The Tech. Angel of the Moon.
