Good morning guys,

I am a noob to this site and I am hoping that maybe one of the many knowledgable members can help with the dreaded slowness of
my internet browsing after removal of the dreaded Shield Virus.

After using MBAM to remove it and then rescaning with Spybot, Trojan Remover & ESET, I believe i have finally removed it however I am experiencing extremelly slow
internet speeds now.

I have ADSL2+ & am only approx 2kms from my exchange but only getting speeds of 1.64M/bs download and 0.83 M/bs upload.

I believe that I may still have reminensce of this dreaded virus which is causing this slowness.

I hope that somebody could possibly help me as my laptop is actually my wife's who uses it for childcare purposes and was tricked by this virus believing that it was infected in the first place.

I have posted an extract from Hijack This if it would be of any help in diagnosing the problem.

Many thanks.

Hi, welcome to the WTT Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to help you with your malware issues. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Please do not run any scans or fixes without my direction.
  • Finally, stay with this topic until I give you the final 'All clear' post.

1) MBRCheck
Please download MBRCheck.exe to your desktop.

  • Be sure to disable your security programs
  • Double click on the file to run it (Vista and Windows 7 users will have to confirm the UAC prompt)
  • A window will open on your desktop
  • if an unknown bootcode is found you will have further options available to you, at this time press N then press Enter twice.
  • If nothing unusual is found just press Enter
  • A .txt file named MBRCheck_mm.dd.yy_hh.mm.ss should appear on your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of that file.

2) DDS
Please download DDS from either of these links

LINK 1
LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.

  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt.

3) GMER
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. It will be a randomly named executable.

  • Double click the exe file.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

4) What You Will Need To Post:
  • MBRCheck log
  • DDS logs
  • GMER log
Good evening Raktor, Thankyou so much for your quick reply and yourkind assistance in helping me fix my problem. I have followed your instructions and have attached the files as per your request. I only have one issue which I cannot attach the GMER file. I have tried it as a text file however it is above the file size. I then tried it as a Zip file which is not possible as the type of file. Could you please suggest what the best method if sending you the GMER.txt file for your perusal / assesment. Many Thanks Gagzta
Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to gagzta.exe before saving it to your desktop.

==================================

Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.
1) P2P Warning
P2P - I see you have P2P software (Azureus/Limewire) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It likely contributed to your current situation. This page will give you further information.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
Please see this topic for more information:
Perils of P2P File Sharing.
I would strongly recommend that you uninstall these now. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

2) Combofix
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

RegNull::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\System*]

SkipFix::

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as gagzta.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into gagtza.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

3) MBAM
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

4) What You Will Need To Post:
  • Combofix log
  • MBAM log
You can set this scan running now, it will take all night. :P

Please do a scan with the Kaspersky Online Scanner

  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
    files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a long time, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report

To obtain the report:
  • Click on Save Report As
  • In the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
  • In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select Text file [*.txt]
  • Click Save

(Note for Internet Explorer users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)

Post the Kaspersky log, and post how your internet connection is going now.
Good evening Raktor, Sorry about the late reply, I have been busy with work. You weren't wrong about it taking all night to scan… :D I have attached the report as per your instructions. I have noticed once I do the scan with Kapersky and still have the browser open the speed is good at around 7.6 K/bs. But once I close it, it drops down back to 2.3 K/bs. I am thinking that maybe I do have reminensce left of the virus as the report shows.
