Good morning all…. I am at a loss on my mom's computer :pullhair:, I live 300 miles away from her so I can't physically be there to work on her computer, but I have tried several things thru log me in to no avail. Here is the scenerio: if you try add/remove programs it shuts the computer down if you go onto Internet Explorer, shuts her computer down try to run a virus update (she has F-secure but last update reads 06/21/2008 with a failed), shuts her computer down I have transferred downloads to her thru log me in for Avast, Kaspersky, CCLeaner…several others, some will install but then when you try to run a scan you get either an error message that states there is no internet connection to update (even though I am on logme in and she can open IE for a bit at that time) or it shuts her down during the scan. Can't do a free online scan cause IE will shut her down. I have tried walking her thru it in safemode, but same error stating no internet connection. She can get on IE in safe mode with networking and it will not shut her down…… She is not computer literate so it's hard for me to walk her thru things in safe mode. Is there anything else I can try? I am assuming it is a trojan/virus that got her…… Thanks in advance!!!
:welcome:

Try this:

Print out these instructions as we may need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested in this guide on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 5 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.
  • rkill.exe
  • rkill.com
  • rkill.scr
  • WiNlOgOn.exe
  • uSeRiNiT.exe

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Next:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
  • Then click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste". .
This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you. Otherwise you can close this log when you wish. Ran as NAME on 09/13/2010 at 18:18:01. Services Stopped: Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running: Rkill completed on 09/13/2010 at 18:18:08. It didn't find any processes running…. tried to install Malware, installed but couldn't update, gave me an error, then shut her down before I could write down the error code. Going to try and run hijack this and copy the report to you…..

Lets check some settings on your system:
  • Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  • Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL, or AOL Connection.
  • Left click on Properties
  • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
  • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen

Go to Start->Run->Type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS Window will be displayed. At the command prompt, type the following and press Enter after each line:

IPCONFIG /release
IPCONFIG /renew
Type Exit

Restart the computer and let me know how it's running.
it kicked her off the internet completely since it did not go through the renew process, I am walking her through it now….. I am back on thru logmein on her computer, but I still cannot get Malware to update, I have a attached a copy of the print screen error (sorry, I know you do not like attachments but I didn't know how else to send it to you)
Lets try combofix.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
