Hello! I was hoping somebody might be able to help me with my problems. It seems as if I have some sort of Google redirect-type thing going on. When using Internet Explorer I am frequently getting redirected to various webpages, using yahoo search engine or sometimes just with pop-ups occurring. My IE also has run slower (though not always) and even other programs can be slow to load. Any help would greatly be appreciated!
Here is a copy of my HijackThis log:

Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!
Please be advised I am still in training, and all of my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
This may cause a delay in response time, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I will post back shortly with instructions.
It would appear that you have more than one anti-virus solution on your machine. I can see both AVG9 and McAfee installed. Having more than one anti-virus program on your machine, even if only one is running, can cause conflicts and slowdowns in the performance of the machine. Before continuing on, please completely uninstall one of the programs. The easiest way to do this is to visit one of these pages and use one of the removal tools listed below:
AVG Remover Tool
or
MCPR.exe McAfee Removal Tool (Scroll down a bit to see the download of the tool).

Please note: If you remove all the McAfee products, you will also be removing the McAfee Personal Firewall. If you choose to remove McAfee, please be sure to re-enable your Windows Firewall (via Control Panel) after you have removed McAfee.

If you are not prompted to do so, please make sure you reboot your machine before continuing on.

Run Hijack This
*Double click on the icon on your desktop to launch Hijack This
*Click on the Scan button
*When the scan has finished, please put a check in the box next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5577

*Make sure all other windows, including your browser are closed, and then click on the Fix Checked button

HijackThis has largely been replaced by other tools. Since being acquired by TrendMicro, HijackThis has not been regularly updated. Many infections are now able to hide partly, or completely from a HijackThis scan. OTL ncludes all the scan locations of HijackThis and more. It's not only a more comprehensive scan tool, but also offers more powerful removal features.

OTL Custom Scan

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click on Minimal Output at the top
  • Download the following file scan.txt to your Desktop. Click here to download it. You may need to right click on it and select "Save"
  • Double click inside the Custom Scan box at the bottom
  • A window will appear saying "Click Ok to load a custom scan from a file or Cancel to cancel"
  • Click the Ok button and navigate to the file scan.txt which we just saved to your desktop
  • Select scan.txt and click Open. Writing will now appear under the Custom Scan box
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

If you have CDEmulation drivers installed (such as Daemon Tools, Alcohol120) please follow the instructions below to run DeFogger prior to and after running GMER. If you do not have any CDEmulation drivers installed, you do not need to run DeFogger and you can go right to the instructions to run GMER.

Download DeFogger

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download and Run GMER

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
OK, so I fixed the two HijackThis items as requested and used “add/remove programs” to uninstall Mcafee and components from the computer (I couldn’t get the uninstall download tool to work from Mcafee). I didn’t run the Defogger because I don’t believe I have any CDEmulation drivers- I don’t know what that is and I didn’t recognize the examples you gave. Below I’ve posted the OTR scan logs and the Gmer log. Thanks again for your help with this!

Can you please tell me how your computer is running at this point?
Here are my Mlawarebytes and OTR logs. I find that things seem to be running faster on the computer, though I am still getting some re-directs. It occurs when I'm searching out of Yahoo mainly. I think things are better, however, though I haven't been able to do much surfing the last few days. Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
  • Click on: Save Report As
  • Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
  • Text file [*.txt] Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.
Sort-of…I am encountering some problems running the Kaspersky computer scan. It has been cut short a couple of times, then another time it wascompleted but the log was unable to be saved. I am running it again at this moment and hopefully I will be able to get a saved log to send to you.The scans take a long time, so having to do it now for the 4th time or so is the reason for my slow response, sorry! I have no compter access at work so all my trials must be attended to in the evenings.Hopefully I'll have a log for you later this evening. Thanks!
If you aren't able to get Kaspersky to run and save a log please try this instead:

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scan

Since you are still having the redirect issues, even though scans are coming up clean, we are going to want to try to do a little more troubleshooting here. First, we need to update your Java and Adobe as older versions contain security vulnerabilities.

[external image: Posted Image]
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 21 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u21 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH CheckedApplications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Update Adobe Reader
There have been updates to Adobe Reader to address security vulnerabilities. You should download the latest version from the Adobe website.

I did not see any browser other than Internet Explorer on your machine. In order to better assess where the redirects are stemming from, I'd like you to install Firefox and do some browsing from it. After you have had a chance to browse for a bit using Firefox, please return and tell me if you are getting redirects when using it - or if you are only getting them in Internet Explorer. (You mentioned getting redirects when browsing via Yahoo - please be sure to test that in Firefox as well.)
Well I've had some trouble since my last post. I downloaded the newest Java as you requested, and then removed all previous Java applications. Things were fine until I re-booted. After the reboot, all my USB ports seem to be inactive. This includes the mouse and the wireless internet adapter. I therefore have great difficulty navigating through Windows and have no access to the internet. I'm at a different computer now. Any suggestions to get my USB ports back to functionality? Surely I didn't delete something when deleting old Javas because the mouse and wireless adapter were working fine before the re-boot. I did install the new Java version, but cannot carry on any further without internet acess from that computer. JEEZ! OK, thanks.
There is no reason for USB ports and the wireless adapter to stop working from an update of Java. If you have only rebooted the system one time since then, please reboot a couple more times and see if the problem persists. Also, if you have another mouse, it would be helpful to plug that in and see if the problem continues when using a different one. In your next response, please let me know if the problem persists after multiple reboots, and also if you were able to test another mouse.
