Hi Folks,

I need some help with my desktop computer running XP Media Edition. I got this computer from a friend who upgraded and didn't want to deal with trying to fix this old desktop. I did my usual/go-to stuff: ran an MBAM scan and fix and also ran CCleaner and its registry scan. Both programs fixed a bunch of stuff but there is one threat that MBAM apparently can't get rid of.

When I run the full MBAM scan, I only get one error:
Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command\(default) (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: (C:\Program Files\conhost.exe "%1" %*) Good: ("%1" %*) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

But even though I quarantine it and then delete it, the next time I run a scan, I get the same 1 error found! CCleaner's registry tool is doing something similar.

After scanning the registry, Ccleaner reports:
Problem: Open With Apllication Issue
Location: C:\Program Files\conhost.exe "%1"%*
Registry Key: HKCR\exefile\shell\open

But again, after I "fix" it and rescan, I get the same exact error.

As far as actual symptoms that the computer is showing, I can only think of two off the top of my head. For one, when try to launch a program that should be executable (such as MBAM, ccleaner, HJT, etc.) it asks me to choose a program to run the file with, and then I have to browse and manually select the .exe file that I just double clicked in the first place. It's like when you try to open a music or image file that is in a format that you've not used before, only these are actual programs that I'm trying to run. Also, I am getting the dreaded random redirects in Internet Explorer. I had that particular problem with a laptop before, and after several days of trying to track down the rootkit problem, me and my professional helper both decided that it was best to just reformat the drive and start over with a fresh installation. But that isn't an option with this computer, so hopefully the redirect thing won't be such a pain this time around!

Directly below, I've pasted a HJT log, and directly below that, I've pasted the complete MBAM log. THANKS in advanced!

GMER log

Good Day!
Conspire: I'm having trouble with the GMER scan. I start the scan, and then when I come back later (it's been taking at least a few hours to complete… is that normal?) GMER is not open anymore. I don't know whether it is freezing/closing in the middle of the scan or just automatically closing when the scan is finished, but it is nowhere to be found when I come back to the computer. I have done everything else that you suggested though. The various logs are attached to this post
Hi,

Go to My Computer-> Tools-> Folder Options-> View tab:
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
  • Select - Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck- Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK. (Remember to Hide files and folders once done)

Please go to one of the below sites to scan the following files:
jotti.org
VirScan
Virus Total

click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\wmhawtzl.sys
C:\WINDOWS\is-LVP7K.exe
C:\WINDOWS\is-LVP7K.msg
C:\WINDOWS\is-LVP7K.lst

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.
If it says already scanned – click "reanalyze now"
Please post the results in your next reply.

Good Day!
Conspire: I couldn't find the first file that you told me to scan (C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\wmhawtzl.sys). I didn't do a search for the file to see if it might be located somewhere else on the drive, but it definitely wasn't in the directory C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers. However, I did scan the other 3 files. The results are below: Filename: is-LVP7K.exe Status: Scan finished. 0 out of 19 scanners reported malware. Scan taken on: Sun 22 Aug 2010 22:03:11 (CET) Permalink ——————————————————————————– Additional info File size: 711168 bytes Filetype: PE32 executable for MS Windows (GUI) Intel 80386 32-bit MD5: 296a2fac6a99515a8a57d6af147890e6 SHA1: 44e5e5bedf8527fd15a25ff0fab1cd8cd34b82a8 Filename: is-LVP7K.lst Status: Scan finished. 0 out of 19 scanners reported malware. In your last post, you asked for an OTL Fix Log and a Fresh OTL Log. I'm not sure exactly what this means. I did the custom fix that you wanted me to do, but it did not produce a log. It just said that the computer needed to reboot to complete the fixes. But there was no mention of a log, and no log appeared on my desktop (where OTL.exe is located) even after I rebooted. Then I did a new OTL scan (no custom scans/fixes, I just clicked on the Scan button at the top of OTL). It DID produce a log which is the one which I've attached. Is this what you meant by "Fresh OTL log?" Also, should I have inserted the custom scan text that I used for the first OTL scan I did a couple of days ago? Finally got GMER to complete successfully (in Safe Mode). It's log is also attached.
Hi,

Is this what you meant by "Fresh OTL log?" Also, should I have inserted the custom scan text that I used for the first OTL scan I did a couple of days ago?

Yes, when I mean fresh OTL log, I need you to run the OTL scan again without copy/paste the custom scans command and post back the log back here as you did on your last post. The OTL should have produce a fix log for you when I posted the fix for you, and it should be located in C:\_OTL\MovedFiles which the file name looks something like this "08222010 173000.log". The number represents the time stamp for the creation of the log. Look for it and then post back here in your next reply.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to ConspireCF before saving it to your desktop.

==================================

Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Combofix log

Good Day!
Conspire, It will not let be open Combofix by dragging a text file into it. It says application not found. The only way I can open Combofix (which is still renamed ConspireCF by the way) is to double click on it. Then it opens up the screen to choose which application to open it with (which was the original problem that I reported in my original post). If I select the Combofix logo from the list, it brings up a series of other "choose apllication" windows for applications that I didn't even ask it to open. I hit cancel on these because I don't know why they are popping up. But everytime I close one, another pops up. Eventually, after I've closed out all of these unwanted "choose application" windows, Combofix will open. But using the drag technique, I just get a no application found message. When the choose application window that seemed particularly suspicious given the problems I'm having with executables. In the midst of a bunch of windows trying to open iexplore.exe, there was one that wanted to open a file called "hideexec.exe." I'm not sure if that is exactly it because I was trying to close out of all of them so fast, but I thought that was an interesting name for a file. Any suggestions? Should I try the drag method of opening CF in Safe Mode maybe?
Hi,

Sorry for the late reply.

I noticed that in your OTL fix log has a rather odd account name in your system : ShoppingReport - Did you create that account?

Yes, please try to perform the fix in Safe mode.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.

No. Not sure where that came from. That username doesn't show up as an actual user to login with in Windows though. And when I go to documents and settings –> Users, that folder appears to be empty (unless the files are hidden; I forgot to check). Also, I already tried dragging the script file into ComboFix in Safe Mode. That didn't work either. Got the application not found message. Should I try downloading ComboFix again? Right now, I'm still using the original one that is renamed "ConspireCF." Also, do you find anything suspicious about the "hideexec.exe" (or similar) file that I mentioned in my last post? I saw it when I tried to open ComboFix the normal way (just clicking the icon, not dragging the text file into it). It triggered a bunch of "choose the program you want to use to open the file" windows. I'm not sure why all these windows popped up when all I wanted to do was open a single instance of ComboFix. Most of the windows wanted to open Internet Explorer, but I think one of them wanted to open a file called hideexec.exe.
Hi,

I'm not sure the hideexec.exe is a legit file or not because I need to have a full directory in order for me to determine it. Right now there's one registry entry that we have to fix in order to get Combofix running.

Run OTL.exe
  • Copy/paste the following text written inside of the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

    :OTL
    O35 - HKLM\..exefile [open] – C:\Program Files\conhost.exe "%1" %* File not found
    O37 - HKLM\…exe [@ = exefile] – C:\Program Files\conhost.exe "%1" %* File not found

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL log ( don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time )
