Computer Novice here…
My PC seems to be fine, but when Im on Myspace, occasionally I am redirected to an automatic malware scanner It says Im infected but I always instantly close the browser.
Then It seems all is well even Myspace….for awhile…then same thing.
Always only Myspace, never Facebook.

I did the Hijack log file…here it is…

Hello Jerrybgoode

:welcome:

My name is Blottedisk, I'll be happy to assist you with all your malware problems you have on your computer. Solving any malware-related problem may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine. Before we start fixing your computer, there are a few points you need to know:

  • Please don't start a new topic, but reply on this one.
  • If you don't understand something, please ask!
  • If you find any new problems and/or details, please post them!
  • If you are unresponsive to this thread within three days, the thread will be locked due to inactivity. However, if you will be away, let us know and we will be sure to keep the thread open.
  • As I'm still in training at What The Tech, all my posts needs to be checked by an expert first. This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.
  • Don't attempt to clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process. Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Remember: absence of symptoms does not mean your computer is clean.

Reply to this topic until I say your computer is clean. Please bear with me, I will post back to you as soon as I can.
Hi again,

Is there any particular reason why you´re not using an antivirus software? It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. I´ll give you links to good free ones once the computer has been cleaned.

Please, do not use the comptuer exept for downloading tools and checking this topic. Now, please follow these steps in order:

Step 1 | Please download RSIT from one of the following mirrors:

This is THE Mirror

——————————————————————–
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Select "List files/folders created or modified in the last 3 months"
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open:
    • log.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • info.txt <- this one will be minimized
    • ( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
  • Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next reply please. Use two replies if you prefer.

Step 2 | Please download RootRepeal from one of the following mirrors:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

——————————————————————–
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
  • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
  • Click the Scan button
  • In the Select Scan dialog, check:
    • Drivers
    • Files
    • Processes
    • SSDT
    • Stealth Objects
    • Hidden Services
  • Click the OK button
  • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
  • Click OK to start the scan
The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running

  • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
  • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
  • Go to File, then Exit to close the program

If the report is not too long, post the contents of RootRepeal.txt in your next reply. If the report is very long, it will not be complete if you post it, so please attach it to your reply instead.
The reason I dont use AVG or other anti-virus software is this is my desktop PC which I mainly use as an audio recording studio. I do have Spybot but Im pretty sure its worthless. My laptop has avg. I use it to pay bills….etc… I need Internet on this machine to send music files to other studios and musicians. I also need internet on this machine to update music related software and download music software plug ins online. The prob is when I go on myspace to upload Songs and chat with ppl I get this virus scanner pop up redirect that im pretty sure is Malware of some kind. Im hesitant to install antivirus stuff as it loads up my process meter. When I run multiple instances of Midi keyboard programs I need all the power directed to my music software and cant have stuff running in the background. Believe it or not I built this by myself PC from scratch with the intent of being a DAW (digital audio workstation) and until I got online it was perfect…. Now when I do alot of MIDI electronic keyboard stuff it struggles a bit. Just a bit but it is annoying. It used to have no issues. TY for your reply!
Hi Jerry Thanks for the info  In most cases Spybot S&D uses more resources than any free antivirus programs out there. Therefore I would recommend you to disable Spybot S&D resident module, (wich should be optional) and install a propper antivirus (wich should be mandatory). You´re probably infected with a Hijacker of some kind. Please run RSIT and RootRepeal as instructed in my previous post, and paste the contents of the logs in your next reply.

Unable to do step 2! When I run Root Repeal about halfway through it restarts machine. I retried, ran all scan tabs successfully and tried scanning drives last, thats when it reboots. I did notice a folder called "PChealth" THAT is the one Im redirected to when Im online. I NEVER allowed this app to install…. Also for some time when I restart, (Not always)a note saying something like this pops up "Windows has stopped Win 32 service from running to protect your computer" And sometimes my taskbar goes white.
Hi Jerry,

Please correct me if I´m wrong: You are not redirected to another website, but a folder called PCHealth pop-ups?
PCHealth is a legit Microsoft component, however if this folder is popped-up again, please copy it´s address and provide it on your next reply. Now, please do the following:

Step 1 | Please have a look at the following link and disable Spybot´s TeaTimer:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Step 2 | Now please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:

Main Mirror - This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
Zipped Mirror - This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.

——————————————————————–

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.

Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system…click NO.
  • Make sure all options are checked except:
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, which is typically C:\
    • Show All (This is important, so do not miss it.)

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it

  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save… button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.

– If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.
Definitely a redirect to a webpage I may be wrong about the name "PC Health" I am unable to run GMER, my machine locks up when finished scanning. I will try in safe mode this weekend. There is defintely something going on… Thanks again for your help!
Ummm had to do the scan in safe mode.
Now my active desktop is white and wont reset after several restarts and attempts.

Here is the GMER result:

Hi Jerry

Thanks for the log and the info. Unfortunately there´s a rootkit in your machine, which is possibly causing some of the issues you are experiencing (the desktop problem, the redirection, etc.). Please do the following (you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix):

In normal mode, download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to X71we0vc.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

——————————————————————–

  • Double click on the renamed Combofix.exe (X71we0vc.exe) & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Did the combofix.
Thanks!

Here is Combo fix logfile:

Hello Jerry,

You have been infected with a rootkit, though it has been deactivated now.. This type of malware can provide an attacker with full access via a backdoor. This means that sensitive information could have been stolen. I would advise to change any passwords for any accounts that you have accessed with the infected computer using a clean computer as soon as possible. If you have used this computer for banking, I would strongly suggest that you report the possible stolen information. Please do not use the computer for any further transactions, or to enter any other information, if at all possible, until it is declared clean.

You may want to read this article on how to handle identity theft.
You may also want to read this article regarding preventing of identity theft.

This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

Please post back to let me know how you wish to proceed.
Thanks for your help. I dont use this PC to purchase online and especially wont now. Do you think the rootkit was causing the redirect to the scanner site? I dont wanna reformat so I guess Ill stay as is. What anti-virus protection do you reccommend that I can use that will not use resources when I am recording? I disconnect from the internet when I record audio.
