I believe I've had some sort of infection that does not allow me to open my browsers at all.
At first, the programs would crash or shut down automatically after 10 seconds or so. Now they don't even run at all. I'll open them, but they won't appear and they'll disappear from the task manager quickly.
Your help would be greatly appreciated

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Try System Restore

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows…ns-in-Windows-7

System Restore Win7

System Restore
Restores your computer's system files to an earlier point in time without affecting your files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

If you use System Restore from the System Recovery Options menu, you cannot undo the restore operation. However, you can run System Restore again and choose a different restore point, if one exists.

If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press Enter. (If Repair your computer isn't listed as an option, then your computer doesn't include preinstalled recovery options, or your network administrator has turned them off.)

Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click a tool to open it.
LDTate, thanks for the response. I already ran System Restore initially when I had this problem and it made things worse. Initially, my browsers would crash seconds after opening them. After the System Restore they wouldn't open at all. I managed to run a mix of programs such as spybot, malwarebytes, windows malicious software removal tool etc, and deleted most of the files that were infected. After reinstally firefox it works fine, but Internet Explorer is still down. I read online that uninstalling/reinstalling Internet Explorer is very complicated, else I would have done that by now, but I believe the infected file is probably in that directory. What do you recommend now? Another system restore to an earlier date?

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I can't even get IE8 to work on my pc.

Lets do this first:
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Next:

Remove IE8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

I suggest you do this:

Uninstall Internet Explorer 8 to return to Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP

Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
Click "Add or Remove Programs."
Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 8 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."

After the above let me know how it's running.

You mentioned Windows XP, but I have Windows 7, but I'll assume it's the same process anyways?

Yes, just a little different.
  • Click START Search
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Before you uninstall IE8, try running without add-ons.

To temporarily disable all add-ons
1.Click the Start button , click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Does IE8 open now?
Internet Explorer without add-ons does not run. A quick question: I have a recovery partition on my HDD and my Trend Micro software indicated that 180+ files on that partition drive were infected with viruses. However, after running two or three more scans and some other programs, they came up with nothing infected. The files are quarrantined, is there a way I can double check if these files are really infected or not?
go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

(Full path of file)

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned

If virscan.org is too busy you can try these.

http://virscan.org/

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html

Thanks for the links. Back to the Internet Explorer issue, I've "disabled" it according to the Windows Vista/7 instructions, but now what? I'm a little confused.
Remove IE8

LDTate, I have already done as that link indicated. But since IE8 came preinstalled on Windows 7, there's no previous version of IE to fall back on. Now what?
