Hello janmiller and welcome to WhatTheTech. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted.
  • Any underlined text in my posts indicates a clickable link.
  • You should print any instructions I give you for ease of use and reference.
  • If you have any questions at all, please stop and ask before proceeding.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

DDS.scr
DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.
  • Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

If you have trouble running GEMR:
  • Make sure that your security software is disabled
  • Uncheck the box next to "Files" this time also
  • If you still can't run it, try in the Safe Mode
Please include the following in your next post:
  • DDS and Attach.txt logs
  • GMER log
I followed all instructions and got as far as the GEMR scan. I disabled AVG, tried it by unchecking the box next to files and tried scanning in Safe Mode, all with the same results: Problem in file pxtoapow.sys, PAGE-FAULT-IN-NONPAGED-AREA. Okay, so I downloaded Rookit Unhooker and when I ran the scan, It finished scanning files and went to CodeHooks. Lots of info howed up and then RKUnhooker LE.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. Gave me a choice to Debug or Close. I tried to Debug and it closed. I went back in and only scanned CodeHooks. This is the Rookitreport2. I went back in to scan Drivers, Stealth Code and Files. It skipped over Drivers and scanned StealthCode and Files(c:`). The first time, nothing appeared as suspected files in Drivers. So, Rookitreport1 is the scan of stealthCode and files. I then downloaded Malwarebytes'Anti-Malware. Here are all 3 reports. janmiller,

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Java™ 6 Update 16 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts. If it does not, let me know.

Once the install is complete…

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report… at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report… button.
  • Change the Files of type dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasReport.txt to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Run DDS again and post only the new DDS.txt report (I don't need the Attach.txt report this time).
Please include the following in your next post:
  • Kaspersky log
  • New DDS.txt log
I updated Java and followed instructions . I did NOT turn off real time scanner because I already disabled AVG before starting. How do I tell what anti virus software is running? I uninstalled Norton and I thought I entirely removed it from my computer. But it is still scanning emails with Norton. I don't know how to turn that off. Also, after removing malware from MBAM, windows firewall is off. Is this okay? It keeps prompting me to turn it back on. Then I clicked on Kaspersky Online Scanner, got a pop up box that said - launch of the Java Application is interrupted. Please establish an uninterupted Internet connection for work with this program. I went to IE and typed in Kaspersky Online Scanner and there were so many options, but I downloaded Kasperly 7.0 version. Once I hit accept, another popup box: This application's digital signature has an error. Do you want to run this application? I hit run. Ran the security prompt and it finished downloading and installing. Clicked on Settings and left those boxes checked, Clicked on My computer and it started the scan. During the scan, I got a pop up box: Windows virtual memory minimum too low. Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of yuor virtual memory paging site. During this process memory requests for some applications may be denied. The scan continued and at 258 objects scanned, I got an error message(lower bar) that said-Target applet or JVM process exited abruptly. janmiller,

Try this scan instead:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please run ESET Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • ESET Results
I tried several times to run the ESET Online Scanner and I get as far as Click the Start Button. Then NOTHING. Everything keeps coming up with error on page message and then IE is not responding and it is taking forever to do anything.
janmiller,

Try to run a full scan with your AVG antivirus. Then run DDS again and post the new DDS.txt log (I don't need the Attach.txt report this time).

Please include the following in your next post:
  • AVG Scan Results
  • A new DDS.txt report

janmiller,

Other than general slowness/poor performance are you having any other troubles with the PC? Please do this next:

🖼Click to load external image (Posted Image) Please download OTM
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTM to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
    "42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6"=-
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6}]
    :Commands
    [EmptyFlash]
    [EmptyTemp]
  • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM and reboot your PC.
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
Please include the following in your next post:
  • OTM log
New memory cards were added to my computer and it seems to be running better. I'm still getting error on page notices on everything I run. I downloaded OTM, copied the code box and clicked Moveit! Button. Before I could copy to the clipboard, I was asked to reboot to finish the move process. Once that was done, the notepad appeared and I copied and pasted that report. Is it the one you want. I never got a chance to enter*.log, so I'm not sure this is the correct one. All processes killed Error: Unable to interpret in the current context! A new icon was added to my desktop and I opened it and this was on the notepad. I don't know if this is what you need. [LocalizedFileNames] Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4
Hi,

I'm still getting error on page notices on everything I run.

Can you please elaborate on that a little? Do you get that message from all your programs, or just when your browsing the internet?
