A friend of mine was scammed yesterday. Someone rang up purporting to be a Microsoft technician and told her that they had detected a problem with her computer. They got her to go the Event Viewer and pointed out all the errors logged there. They then talked her into downloading and installing TeamViewer and she actually invited them in for a session !
Something eventually twigged and she panicked and shut down her computer but they were in there well and truly long enough to do some damage.
She uses her computer for a bit of internet banking and has used her credit card a few times to buy things on-line, so the first thing she did was contact her bank and they did the right thing and cancelled the credit card and apparently will allocate her a new account number. Presumably she will change her password as well.
She took the computer to a local IT guy and he told her that the only way to ensure her security is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall her OS. He wanted to charge her $280 for this so she backed out. He did remove Teamviewer however.
I ran Malwarebytes over it and only found 1 search engine hijacker. I also used CCleaner to clean up her system registry and Teamviewer does seem to be completely gone. Tomorrow I plan to plug her back into the internet and use the Shieldsup service to test her system for vulnerabilities.
I ran hijackthis as well, but am having a little trouble interpreting the results. It looks OK, but I'm no expert and could easily be missing something.
