hi i just bought a desk top pc on ebay. it came with vista ultimate and i used my friends windows 7 to upgrade it to windows 7 ultimate. prior to having done this i was able to keep my monitor at 1280x1024 and everything was fine.
now with the win7 whenever i put the resolution to that it says "signal out of range change to 1280x1024- 60hz".
i googled how to accomplish this which is basically what i have been doing, but where it says that i should be able to change the refresh rate theres only a default setting. so now i'm stuck with 1024x768.
these are the basic specs..it doesnt have a seperate video card its intergrated (the seller stated that the card that was installed failed) now its just a ati rage
Processor Type: Intel Pentium D 805
Processor Speed (per Core): 3.46 GHz
Processor Configuration: Dual Core
Memory (RAM): 2 GB (ddr2 pc2-6400)
any help would be appreciated.
Here you go:
Control panel>Display>Screen resolution. Set preferred resolution and click on 'Apply' but don't then click on OK !
Now click on 'Advanced settings' in the same window and then click on the 'Monitor' tab. Select your preferred refresh rate. Click OK and then on OK again in the next window that opens.
Should be OK now unless there are problems somewhere with your set up resources.
Cheers,
Lee.
hi lee
yep already tired that.
the only choice for refresh rate is "use hardware default setting".
i had updated the monitor driver as well and nothing.
i had ran the trouble shooter and it said:
the crrent video card driver isnt compatible with the windows dispaly driver module.
but i had no problem when using the vista ult.
What is the make/model number of the Video card ( don't remember if we discussed this in your other thread or not).
Have you tried doing Windows Update to see if it finds a better driver? So far, with Windows 7, I've had no problems with drivers delivered via Windows Update. This was not true with XP, not sure about Vista.
hi ztruker,
i dont remember where i found this before but it just said Rage Family (i believe from ati). i just ran cpuid and it states Standard VGA Graphics Adapter..and it is ati radeon
it says…Standard VGA Graphics Adapter..
btw, just out of curiosity whats a human interface device, i have 5 of those inputs with 2 saying -HID- compliant consumer control device, 1 saying HID- compliant device and the other 2 are usb inputs (i know what that is)…
i won this on ebay and the seller stated that the video card had failed and "It just has a standard display VGA out video card" and that is all the info that i can gather myself examining different things.
If the video card failed then you are using the onboard video chipset on the mother board. Download the Freeware version of SIW (the SIW Without Installer (English-Only) version). Run it, then click on Motherboard under the Hardware section. Right click in the right side info pane and select Copy to Clipboard.
Then paste the info in a response here. Would be interesting to also see what the Video section has. Paste that here as well.
."Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" sound like on-board video to me.
Might explain a few things if it is.
The system's refusal to go beyond the standard resolution mentioned, sounds about right if there is no Video Card or a broken one.
The solution to any increase in resolution in the above scenario would be to buy a Video Card that the board and CPU can handle for the resolution required and it's intended use (what level of games etc).
Cheers,
Lee
the top portion is what i got when clicked motherboard and text under the "+" signs was what i got when i clicked video.
if this is being caused by the lack of a video card why is it that i was able to have proper resolution under vista ult, but not now that i have windows 7 ult?

According to the ASUSTek site, you have the Intel 955x chipset. There are no Windows 7 drivers for that computer so I would try the Vista Chipset driver. Looks like the drive is the same for 32 or 64 bit.
Chipset (3) Version 8.3.0.1013
Description Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility V8.3.0.1013 for Windows 2000/XP & 64bit XP & 32/64bit Vista(WHQL).
File Size 3.23 (MBytes) 2007/09/20 update
Try it and see if it helps. If not we can try to find the driver from the Intel site.
