Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
  • Click on: Save Report As
  • Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
  • Text file [*.txt] Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.
Note: This scan is going to take quite awhile to run. You may want to set it up to run overnight or at a time when you will not need your computer for several hours.

Can you let me know how your machine is running since we removed the leftovers from Symantec? Was there any improvement? Are you still experiencing the slowness?
Hi, Nothing has change in terms of performance with the computer. Its still slow enough that I would probably replace it before school starts. I will run the K scan either today if I think I'll be away long enough or tonight while we sleep…..

  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u21 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.

This is the first scan. I will update Java and do the other scan sometime tomorrow. I don't quite understand how Java can be out of date as I update it regularily, but I will follow the directions as outlined. lder emptied: 0 bytes ->Temporary Internet Files folder emptied: 0 bytes ->Java cache emptied: 0 bytes ->FireFox cache emptied: 0 bytes ->Flash cache emptied: 0 bytes User: HP_Administrator.YOUR-4DACD0EA75 ->Temp folder emptied: 107876801 bytes ->Temporary Internet Files folder emptied: 954261774 bytes ->Java cache emptied: 128094 bytes ->FireFox cache emptied: 0 bytes ->Flash cache emptied: 4398 bytes User: LocalService ->Temp folder emptied: 0 bytes ->Temporary Internet Files folder emptied: 65988 bytes ->Flash cache emptied: 618 bytes User: NetworkService ->Temp folder emptied: 0 bytes ->Temporary Internet Files folder emptied: 33170 bytes %systemdrive% .tmp files removed: 0 bytes %systemroot% .tmp files removed: 0 bytes %systemroot%\System32 .tmp files removed: 0 bytes %systemroot%\System32\dllcache .tmp files removed: 0 bytes %systemroot%\System32\drivers .tmp files removed: 0 bytes Windows Temp folder emptied: 16469 bytes %systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temp folder emptied: 0 bytes %systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files folder emptied: 33170 bytes RecycleBin emptied: 803069368 bytes Total Files Cleaned = 1,779.00 mb [EMPTYFLASH] User: Administrator ->Flash cache emptied: 0 bytes User: All Users User: Default User ->Flash cache emptied: 0 bytes User: HP_Administrator ->Flash cache emptied: 0 bytes User: HP_Administrator.YOUR-4DACD0EA75 ->Flash cache emptied: 0 bytes User: LocalService ->Flash cache emptied: 0 bytes User: NetworkService Total Flash Files Cleaned = 0.00 mb Restore point Set: OTL Restore Point (0) OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.9.1 log created on 07312010_204910 Files\Folders moved on Reboot… File\Folder C:\WINDOWS\temp\Perflib_Perfdata_518.dat not found! Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

I am not seeing any remaining malware in the logs, but obviously you are not seeing any improvement in the slowness of the computer. I know you've had assistance here in the forums before, and it is obvious you do a good job of making sure your system is up to date and protected properly. I'm sure the slowness is a big frustration for you at the moment.

If you have not defragmented your computer recently, please do the following:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer.
  • Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment (in this case C:\), and then click Properties.
  • On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
  • Click Defragment
This could take a bit of time, and again you may wish to set it up to run at a time when you will not be using the computer.

I might suggest that you go to your Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall both Google and Yahoo toolbars. Then reboot the machine and see if there is any improvement. I have seen instances where toolbars (especially older versions of Google Toolbar) have caused general machine slowness. If you do not find there is any improvement after uninstalling them you can always reinstall them if you wish.

Please let me know if either of these help improve the speed of the system. If not, we will try a few other things.
I will work on the next steps tomorrow but do have a question. Since working with you I have had to restart the computer often. In doing so I notice every time it turns back on it intstalls an update to microsoft KB967715. Each time it finishes and I get a message that it is installed, yet the next reboot it installs again - so I'm guessing its not ever actually installing? I know the microsoft updates are quite important to the security of the machine. so what do you think?
The solution to getting that update installed is to do it in Safe mode with Networking. Try doing this:

Boot your computer in Safe Mode
  • Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded, start tapping the F8 key.
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode with Networking menu option.
  • Press Enter.
  • The computer then begins to start in Safe mode with Networking
  • Log into your usual account

Go ahead and let the updates install. If it does not do so on it's own (while you are still in Safe Mode with Networking) you can Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site
Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and follow the directions to check for available updates. Install all the available updates, and if not prompted to do so, reboot your computer when you are done.

You are correct that it is important to keep all your Microsoft updates current. This ensures not only good performance from your computer but also helps to maintain the best security for your system. I encourage you to visit the Microsoft Update site frequently to ensure you have all the critical and non-critical updates. (Keep in mind, some updates do not appear as available until a previous update is installed. It is always wise to visit the site again after installing updates to make sure no more are available.)

Let me know how the other steps go, and if you are able to get this update installed successfully.
Ok I got thru the next set of steps. The windows update site would not work in safe mode. When I tried to follow the link to get updated it gave me an error message that couldn't go to that page. My Mcafee virus scan kept getting shut off in safe mode as well. I'd turn it on and it would shut off. I went to the update site in regular mode and there was a software download available that wasn't auto updating. It said there were no critical updates for me. I looked at my history of updates and this KB967715 is updating every couple days (whenever I restart) and it just did it again. It always says its sucessful, I dont' understand why it keeps doing it.
I almost forgot to remove the yahoo and google toolbars. Good thing I remembered because they are at least part of the problem. Pages are loading quicker on the net now. Still takes longer to get online - reminds me of dialup, but I have cable internet. Still I'm at least at a surfing speed where I can take care of business and not have to buy a new puter for awhile. if you have any other suggestions they are much appreciated.
Please run HijackThis again, choosing to a Do a System Scan Only. When the page loads fully, put a check in the boxes next to just these items:

Make sure all other windows, including the browser are closed and click Fixed Checked.

Please let me know if that improves your browser speed.

You might also consider rebooting your cable modem. Make sure your computers are off and then look for the small reset pinhole on the back of the modem and using a pen or other small object to depress the button inside for a couple of seconds. Allow the modem to restart fully, and then reboot your computers.

I am still concerned about the fact your update is not installing. You may not have been able to reach the Windows Update page for a couple of reasons.
1. You MUST choose Safe Mode with Networking or you will not be able to access the internet.
2. You should be using Internet Explorer to access the Windows Update site.

While it is not a good practice to allow your anti-virus program to remain off, there are times it can conflict with installing Windows updates. I would suggest not worrying about McAfee while you are trying to install the Windows update in safe mode with networking. Just make sure that when you are done you reboot and it comes back on. (We don't want you unprotected any longer than necessary to try the update again.)

Give the instructions to try that update in safe mode with networking one more try, while not worrying about Mcafee. Let me know if you have any success.

McAfee is a very reputable program but it is resource intensive. If you are satisfied with it's performance it certainly offers good protection. However, if you wish to try to speed up the performance of the machine as a whole, we could look at alternative antivirus and firewall programs that might not be so resource intensive. Let me know if you want to pursue this, or if you would like to stick with McAfee.

In your next reply please include:
1. How is the browser speed after doing the fix with HijackThis?
2. Were you able to get the update installed in Safe Mode with Networking with McAfee off?
3. Do you wish to remain with McAfee, or do you want to try a less resource intensive solution?
