- Malware Logs can sometimes take a lot of time to research and interpret.
- Please be patient while I try to assist with your problem. If at any time you do not understand what is required, please ask for further explanation.
- Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
- Read every reply you receive carefully and thoroughly before carrying out the instructions. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive, as in some instances you may have to disconnect your computer from the Internet.
- PLEASE NOTE: If you do not reply after 5 days your thread will be closed.
Please scan you system with the following tool. If you encounter any problems, come back and let me know:
- Please scan your system with GMER
[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
- Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
- Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
- If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
[external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it - In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
- IAT/EAT
- Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
- Show All (don't miss this one)
- Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
- Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
- Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Here's the Gmer log:

- Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
Thank you for the log.
Please hold off from downloading anything else except the tools we require until we get your system cleaned, as it may cause additional problems.I attempted to download Ubuntu last night
Not yet. It appears that you have a recent variant of a TDSS rootkit on your machine. It will most likely take several rounds of treatment before you are good to go so please stay with me.Should I do another DDS log and post it to check and see if everything's gone?
Please work your way through the following steps:
- Please download The Avenger by Swandog46
- Please download The Avenger by clicking here and save the file (called avenger.zip) to your desktop.
- Right click on the Avenger.zip folder and select "Extract All…"
- Follow the prompts and extract the avenger folder to your desktop.
- Copy the text in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):
Files to move: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\redbook.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.sys
Note: the above code was created specifically for this User. If you are not this User, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.
- Once you have copied the text to your Clipboard, open the avenger folder and start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon.
- Right click on the window under "Input script here:", and select "Paste" (You can also Paste the text copied to the clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
- Click on "Execute".
- Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
- The Avenger will automatically do the following:
- It will Restart your computer. (In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Delete" or "Drivers to Disable", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
- On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop. This is normal.
- After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. (This log file can also be found at C:\avenger.txt).
- The Avenger will automatically make a backup of all items you asked it to delete. These backups can be located at C:\avenger\backup.zip.
Please provide The Avenger log in your next reply.
Here's the log. So what's next? You guys really are a Godsend, you know.

So what's next?
- Download Combofix and RE-NAME it BEFORE saving
- Download Combofix from either of the links below. You must rename it to zhora.exe before saving it.
- Save it to your desktop. Change the "save as file type" to "all files".
- Note: In the event you already have Combofix, delete it, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop.
- If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
- Tools->Options->Main tab
- Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
Link 1
Link 2
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
- NOTE: If ComboFix asks to install the Recovery Console, please ALLOW it to do so.
- Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
- When finished, it will produce a report for you.
- Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

- Close any open browsers.
- Disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
- Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

- Download TFC to your desktop.
- Close any open windows.
- Double click the TFC icon to run the program.
- TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run.
- Click the Start button to begin the process.
- Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
- The program should not take long to finish.
- Once complete it should automatically reboot your machine.
- If your machine does not reboot automatically, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean.
- Note: After running TFC your machine may take slightly longer to boot the first time. This is normal.
- MalwareBytes AntiMalware:
- I see that you have MBAM installed.
- Double click on your MalwareBytes AntiMalware icon to launch the program.
- Click on the "Update" tab and then on "Check for Updates".
- The program will now install the latest Malware definition files.
- Once complete, click on the "Scanner" tab, select "Perform full scan"and then click on "Scan".
- Once the program has scanned your computer, a log file will be created in Notepad.
- Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
- If the scan detects any Malware-related objects, make sure that everything is checked, and click "Remove Selected" <– Very Important.
- When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer.
- The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the "Logs" tab.
- Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart your computer, please do so immediately.
- Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
Please post the ComboFix log and the MBAM log in your next reply.
Question: A friend of mine mentioned that 'redbook.sys' is needed for playing audio CDs on systems. Was mine corrupted or something?

Thank you for the logs.
It was'nt corrupted. It was hooked by a TDSS rootkit. We replaced the infected file with a clean oneA friend of mine mentioned that 'redbook.sys' is needed for playing audio CDs on systems. Was mine corrupted or something?
Lets run an Online scan to check for any leftovers:
- Please update your Java
- To update your Java, Click on "Start" then on "Control Panel" and then on the Java icon (looks like a coffee cup).
- In the window that opens, click on the "Update" tab, and then on "Update Now".
- Your Java should begin to update. Please follow any prompts that you receive.
- Please perform the following scan:
- This is a very deep scan that can take many hours. In some instances you may need to let it run overnight. Please be patient.
- It is recommended that you disable your onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans to eliminate software conflicts and to speed up scan time.
- DO NOT surf the net while your resident protection is disabled!
- Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware applications you use.
- Please perform a Kaspersky Online Scan of your computer by clicking here or here.
- Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
- The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
- After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
- This will start the program and scan your system.
- The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run (at times it may appear to stall).
- Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
- Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
- Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
- Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report. To obtain the report:
- Click on: Save Report As
- Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
- In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:Text file [*.txt]
- Then, click: Save
- Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.
- If you need help performing the above steps, an animated tutorial can be found here.
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scan log in your next reply.
Also, please describe how your system is behaving now. Are you still experiencing problems?
Thank you for the log.
You have a number of infected e-mails in what look like three different accounts. They most likely came through the server if this is the one you use. The Kaspersky scan does not tell us which ones are infected, only that they are there. For this reason you are advised to delete all old e-mails and all of those that have attachments, as these may be infected.

Also, it appears as though you may have inadvertantly sent some infected e-mails to other people, as some of the mail appears in your "sent" box (red). If you have recently sent out mail with attachments, it would be a good idea to contact the people you sent it to and tell them not to open it, but to delete it ASAP.
Let me know of you are still having this problem after you reboot and I will put you in touch with our Tech Team.however its also still recognizing my printer-scanner-copier as a remote storage device AS WELL AS a printer. Hoping that will be cleared up in the next reboot.
Go right aheadAlso, can I at least update my virus program and Spybot?
Once you have cleaned out your e mails, please post a new DDS scan.
