Hey i backed up all my information using the "backup" feature on XP to place all the data into one file format with the extension .bfk. Then i placed it on my external hard drive. Its like 60 gb of back up data. When i installed windows 7 how ever, i am unable to restore the back up file of all the data from the previous windows XP isntallation. I want to restore it from my external drive and place it back on my C drive. Because its recognized as an unknown file format. Do you have any idea how i can restore this data from windows 7, because its extremely important data that i backed up well i was working on building my new machine and installing windows 7. I can not loose it.
Hello jeff matthews,

Windows 7 no longer contains the old NTBACKUP program that Windows XP uses for creating/restoring backups. To restore your backup you should reinstall the NT Backup tools from Windows XP on your Windows 7.

To do this:

1. Download nt5backup.cab from http://www.stsanford.com/pebuilder/nt5backup.cab

2. Extract the files inside the cabinet file to a folder of your choice.

3. Run the file NTBackup.exe from the folder.

4. NTBackup will indicate that it cannot connect to the Removable Storage service (removed in Windows Vista & Windows 7). This is only required for tape backups. Click OK.

5. In the Welcome to Backup or Restore Wizard page, click Next

6. Select Restore files and settings, and click Next

7. Click Browse. Locate the .BKF file that you want to restore, and click OK.

8. Expand the catalog, select the files/folders you want to restore, and click Next.

9. Click the Advanced button

10. Select Alternate location from the dropdown, and mention the destination path.

Configure the restore options accordingly.

Click Next, and then click Finish. Your backup should now be restored to the folder destination you selected in step 10.

Hope this helps.

Rich
Did you make sure that you expanded the backup catalog in the wizard? Then select the folders & files you need, otherwise nothing can be restored.
Yeah, only the C drive back up file can expand, and i see all the files in it. But when i try to expand the BFK file on my external hard drive, there is nothing in it. But yet it does say there is 65 gb of storage in that file. So i don't know. I have tried and every time i try to back it up, it just makes a BFK file.

It works for the C drive backup, but not the external drive back up.

Here is the C backup

and here is the external back up the one i need to backup.

As you can see i can't expand that one though, it only shows a BKF file in it.
Man im so confused on this. I just had it working before, i looked at some of the folders and they were recovered, but now i went and deleted some of BKF duplicates and now i can't get it to work any more, it says the path or the fire you specified does not exist. But its still on my hard drive, i can go to it and says 65 gb BKF file.
Damnit this is starting to make me nervous, i HAVE to back up this information, this is all my bank account information, passwords, ID, credit information. all my families records, pretty much everything that is important documents.

Now im getting this error.

Also when i click ok, it says this.

I thought i would be ok if i used the backup feature but i guess not. I must of done something to screw it up some how and now its saying the file format is not recognized.
Damnit this is starting to make me nervous, i HAVE to back up this information, this is all my bank account information, passwords, ID, credit information. all my families records, pretty much everything that is important documents. I found that i was mistaken by the two drives that are G and C. The one that says C is my original C drive backup that i need to back up from my other computer. The G backup i guess is a failed attempt at backing it up so i can't use that BFK file to restore my files.

Now im getting this error when i try to back up the C drive.

Here is the back up file im trying to back up. It was working before, but now all the sudden the program is not recognizing it any more. I think what i did was change it to "backup1.bkf", and then deleted the other backup file (the original one) and then i rehanged it back to "backup.bkf" But i never changed the extension of the file format.

ok so i deleted all the catilogs and started over. I reinstalled the program again. Now it is working, but its only duplicating the BFK file again and i can't find the original backup which contained all my hard drive files and folders.
Oh man.. What did you do? The backup file was modified 7/22/2010 at 7:33pm. You CHANGED the file!!! First of all, when an issue like this crops up ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS make a copy of the backup file and work with the copy, not the original. You really did confuse me because throughout the entire thread you kept saying, I need to back up this…. I need to back up that… There is a big difference between backup and restore. I'm starting to wonder if you didn't really try to backup something to that file rather than restore it? Once the file gets corrupted you are in pretty bad shape. That looks like what has happened. I recently wrote a program to manually extract files out of a similar backup format that was corrupted. Somehow the file was corrupt even after the program verified it during the backup process. Yet, there was 130GB of data and it couldn't open anything. I successfully restored 99.9% of the files after spending two weeks reverse engineering the file and pulling the data out. My point is, this is a mess, and these backup programs that create a single large backup file are dangerous. Do you remember if you chose to compress the file, and/or encrypt the file during backup?
oh well its not good then huh? There is no way around this? No i used the "restore Feature" to restore files. But at first i tried to restore the file that was shown on the program as "G". It kept duplikating the BKF file, but thats all i was able to restore was THAT file. THen i found out that i was restoring the wrong file, because apparently the file that was named "G" was i guess a failed attempt of a backup. It did NOT contain the folders and files from my C drive that was originally backed up from my old computer before i repartitioned and installed windows 7. SO i went to the other file this time and realized that the one titled "C" which was located in my G external drive was the original back up cause when i expanded all the files, they were there. But i tried numerous times to restore those files and every time it came up with those errors that i posted above. Bottom line, is the only file i was able to backup was the "G" backup which wasn't the right one, but the old backup that said 2006 i guess was the backup from my old pc. I don't know the hell it said 2006 though, maybe because the clock setting on that computer was all messed up. The file still exists though, i didn't delete it. I can still see the BFKfile that shows 65 gb of data on it.
OK there has to be a way to back this up, the data is still there. When i try to copy and paste the same file, its trying to transfer 65 gb of data so the DATA IS THERE! any other suggestions how i can back this up.
