Infection?

When I start the computer up, it takes several minutes to come up with the user screen, and once that's up, again 2 or 3 minutes before I can click on my user name. The "tone" that sounds when windows has/is loading is drawn out, and changes in volume. Pages sometimes take forever to load. Sometimes, when I thought I've turned the computer off for the night, it's on when I get up, as though I've rebooted instead of turning it off. Cursor is very jumpy on the screen, almost as though delayed in movement. Also problems seem to occur more in firefox than in IE, although evident in both(slow loading, etc) Thank you in advance!
