The computer refuses to launch all but a few programs, and also does not show any network activity. Another problem is that windows explorer does not work all that well as well as network activity is not shown, although I can still access the internet (using safari, one of the only things that launches). The only way I was able to install hijack this was by booting in safe mode and running the installer. It seems to have eliminated the problems as well (booting in safe mode that is) here is the hijack this report:

Thank you sooo much for helping. Right now the computer is still in safe mode. It just sits because I don't want any more damage to happen to it than has already happened (and not mess with the scans and what not). it doesn't want to launch any installers or anything in normal mode nor does IE work and the network activity still appears dead, even though I am obviously using the internet. Also, when I rebooted it to check what it was doing in normal mode, the explorer took more than 5 minutes to start, so I ended the process and force started it, and from there everything worked just fine. Here is the removal log, all that was removed was adware that I saw: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 4336 Windows 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 (Safe Mode) Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18928 7/21/2010 4:17:25 PM mbam-log-2010-07-21 (16-17-25).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 148428 Time elapsed: 4 minute(s), 20 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 19 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 3 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{8ad9ad05-36be-4e40-ba62-5422eb0d02fb} (Adware.ShopperReports) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. Also, when I rebooted it to check what it was doing in normal mode, the explorer took more than 5 minutes to start, so I ended the process and force started it,

That could be your protedtion / windows programs trying to update. I would suggest you let it finish normal startup and run MBAM again.
Here is the log: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 4336 Windows 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 (Safe Mode) Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18928 7/21/2010 5:42:44 PM mbam-log-2010-07-21 (17-42-44).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 148337 Time elapsed: 4 minute(s), 33 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected) When i start it in Normal mode, it just sits at a black screen, with only the mouse on it. In safe mode, everything runs fine.
That sounds like a driver issue that doesn't load in Safe Mode.

Lets try another tool

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I got combofix all started up, but my windows live one care antivirus is still up. I don't know how to disable it, I've looked at the link provided, but it didn't help a lot. One problem I have is when I launch it, it says: "The Windows Live OneCare service is not working or has been stopped. To correct this problem, try restarting your computer." So when I tried to run combofix, it flagged it as running, but if I click ok twice, it starts to run. Am I safe to run, or is there more that has to be done? i don't want to continue without knowing its safe.
So here's combo fix's log:

Should I reboot into normal to see how it's working, or should I just wait and keep going with w/e shows up in this?

edit: So i just rebooted anyways (not really my choice, somebody did it while I was away >.<) Nothing has changed, the black screen is still there. Programs don't do their thing, but I imagine thats because nothing has happened yet, right?
So, I rebooted, and nothing has changed, still the black screen refusing to change until I end the explorer.exe process and run it again. Nothing has changed at all.

Lets see if we can restore the pc back to where it worked right.

Close and save any documents that you may have open.

Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.

When the Start Menu opens click on the All Programs menu option.

Click once on the Accessories Start Menu group.

Click once on the System Tools Start Menu group.

Click once on the System Restore icon. After you click on the icon, if a User Account Control window opens you should click on the Continue button.

You will now be at the System Restore screen

By default, Vista will already have selected the Recommended restore option. This restore point is one was made after a new program, driver, or update was installed. If you would like to use this restore point, you can click on the Next button to start the restore process. On the other hand, if there is a more recent restore point that you would like to restore you should select Choose a different restore point and press the Next button. This will bring you to a screen, as shown in Figure 2, that contains a listing of all the available restore points that you can restore to.

You should select the restore point that you would like to restore and press the Next button to start the restore process. Vista will display a Window showing your selected restore point and asking you to confirm that this is the one you would like to restore.

If you would like to select a different restore point press the Back button. Otherwise you can press the Cancel button to exit System Restore or the Finish button to begin the restore process. If you selected Finish, Vista will display a second prompt asking you to confirm that you would like to continue the restore.

If you are sure you want to do the restore, then press the Yes button. Vista will now log you off of the computer and start the System Restore process as shown in Figure 5 below.

When the restore has been completed, you computer will be restarted and when Vista boots back up it will be restored to its previous state. When you log in to Vista for the first time after the restore, you will see a message showing that the restore was successful.

If there are any problems with your computer due to the last restore, you can revert back to your previous settings by going back into the System Restore Utility and selecting the Undo System Restore option and pressing the Next button.
So, I restored to the farthest back date, but it was only the 9th of July. Still experiencing the same problems that have been going on. Is there a way to get a date that is farther back? Only 3 dates showed on the restore. =( This is really starting to frustrate me. :pullhair: But thank you soo much for your help. I'm sure we can get to root of the problem eventually.
Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
