I was last here 5 years ago when this site was still coyote. It's nice to see the positive changes. I'm glad the activity has also slowed down, cause I'll have a better chance to get help. Could never get attention 5 years back, as the place was too busy!

My Labtop (Dell D420) 4 years old and I'm still a few month away before I buy a new one. It has become extremely slow this past month and I'm desperately in need to speed it up, because I'm getting nothing done! It also freezes for far too long!

I ran Hijackthis and my log is below. Thanks in advance. (excuse all the s..t I have on my PC)

You have 2 active firewalls running.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZoneAlarm Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe"

O23 - Service: Sunbelt Personal Firewall 4 (SPF4) - Sunbelt Software, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\Personal Firewall\SbPFSvc.exe

Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with each other, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove either:
Sunbelt Software\Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm

Reboot and let me know if that helped.
Hi LDTate, thanks for the advise. There has certainly been an improvement. Is there anything else I can do based on the log I sent you to speed it up more? am I infected?
One more major problem, I lost my sound…! I don't seem to have the required driver. I've patiently lived with this problem for the past 5 months, because i've been too busy with my new born son. I'm not sure how I lost it in the first place, could it have been a virus?
We can have a look for Malware.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

It found 3 infected files, which I deleted. I thought I saved the log, but I can't find it under "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" … I deleted 2 files, named adware.something My system is definitely operating fast. Thanks……. it's not freezing any more. Can you please advise how to restore sound to my labtop?

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I ran combofix and again I'm operating a lot faster….. pages do not freeze any more…. I still have the sound driver problem which I failed to fix. I'm looking for the installation disks, which I'm hoping will solve the problem.

Hi LDTate,

I was hoping to continue where I left off. I had to travel and didn't realize the topic would be closed.

http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?sh…mp;#entry665086

Firstly, I placed the notepad into Combofix and it ran successfully… I'm not sure where to get the log to post for you here.. Please advise?

Secondly, my sound has returned….. thanks, didn't realize you were doing anything about it!

My system is certainly better, but I was concerned I haven't fully completed the clean up process. I still have problems with some software taking for ages to open up and word still freezes sometimes..

Take care

Caal
