Hi,

I didn't know where else to turn, so here I am. I read a few similar issues some people had online… I don't dare to try and fix anything myself because I don't want to mess up my computer or lose any data. I was close to tears at finding out I got infected, but I digress.

It is now after 1AM and this probably started sometime last night around 7-8PM.

I was streaming video, but I had it paused and was away. I came back to resume playback and there was no sound. I thought it was the speakers, but on checking the volume controls, Wave was at 0%. I just turned it back up and carried on watching. It happened many times, but it never crossed my mind something was wrong, yet. Also, a few times I would hear a short audio clip coming from no where.

When I started getting pop up ads, that's when it clicked that I somehow caught something.

While going through my Temp folder, I found three files by "Black Internet File"
Files: loader.exe, smss.exe, 9289765.exe
I deleted everything in my Temp folder and they didn't reappear. I did a search for loader.exe and there's a loader.exe prefetch file in the C:\Windows\Prefetch. To be honest, I'm not sure what those files actually do.

loader.exe was also running in my Task Manager, which I ended. That didn't restart again.
I finally noticed that iexplore.exe was running and I was not using Internet Explorer. When I end it, it restarts. I mainly use Firefox and the pop ups are from IE. "Black Internet File" is probably keeping it running to allow the pop ups.

Lastly, my Firefox browser window would lose its focus and I would have to click it again to use it. This started happening after everything else.

I think I've covered everything that has gone wrong…

Thank you so much for taking the time to read through everything and hope someone can help me.

DDS said to zip Attach.txt and attach it to the post, so that is what I've done. If I shouldn't do that, please tell me and I will delete the attachment and C/P Attach.txt here as well.

Just remembered this, so I'm adding on… I ran AVG9 Free and didn't find anything. I also ran Malwarebytes and it didn't find anything. I had 1.44, so I downloaded 1.46 and I had to restart my comp. I was about to post this topic when I thought that I would run it again using 1.46. I did a full scan, which takes a while, but this time it found something. I hope you all don't mind me C/P the mbab log here as well.

Hmm, don't know if that Spambot is related with "Black Internet" or it's something different. I have not used Illustrator recently. I did not try to remove it.

There's nothing else I can do except to try and get some sleep.

Again, thanks in advance.

Sorry about the inactivity. I wasn't able to come on the computer these past few days after making my initial post. Weekend was pretty busy. I just came on today and found my thread got closed.

This was my old thread
http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=113070

Thanks CatByte for replying last time. I will now follow your instructions.
Also, I just found out my CD/DVD drives aren't being recognized, could it be because of the virus?

remover.exe fix

For GMER, I tried scanning, but my computer would restart on its own. This last time it restarted after about 30 minutes of scanning. I thought I would just go ahead and make this new thread and go from there. I'll try to do the GMER scan again tomorrow and hope my computer won't give me more problem.
Hi

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
Hi, I had GMER running all yesterday, it went for over 7 hours. I had to leave it over night, but when I checked this morning, my computer had restarted on me, so looks like I lost the everything it was scanning. :/ I won't re-scan with GMER now, I'll try Combofix and see how it goes.
hi

please do the following:

Install service pack 3, it will fix your busted catroot and install important security features to your PC

It can be downloaded and installed manually:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"135:TCP"=-
"5000:TCP"=-
"5001:TCP"=-
"5002:TCP"=-
"5003:TCP"=-
"5004:TCP"=-
"5005:TCP"=-
"5006:TCP"=-
"5007:TCP"=-
"5008:TCP"=-
"5009:TCP"=-
"5010:TCP"=-
"5011:TCP"=-
"5012:TCP"=-
"5013:TCP"=-
"5014:TCP"=-
"5015:TCP"=-
"5016:TCP"=-
"5017:TCP"=-
"5018:TCP"=-
"5019:TCP"=-
"5020:TCP"=-

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

**Vista users - right click on the IE icon and run as administrator

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
I'm using someone else's computer right now…

I think I have a bigger issue now. >.<
I left the computer to install service pack 3 and when I came back, it said to click Finish to reboot.
I left it to reboot and when I went back to check, it showed a pop up about lsass.exe

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate application.

Clicked OK, but the screen stayed black, so I manually rebooted and it showed a screen with options on how to start Windows - safe mode, etc. I left it as default, which was Start Windows normally and I ended up getting the same lsass.exe Application error.

What should I do now?
are you able to boot into safe mode? Can you boot into Last Known Good Configuration Tap F8 repeatedly on startup until an advanced option menu appears > try both those options If you can boot to Last Known Good configuration, do that first, if not boot to safe mode and try and do a system restore to before SP3 was installed.
Tapping F8 gave me the options to choose what drive to boot from, so I clicked ESC instead to have it boot from default, since I didn't know which one to choose. It took be back to the screen where it said Windows is not able to start successfully, etc. I chose the Last Known Good Configuration and it booted up and said I successfully installed SP3. It said to choose to turn on or off Automatic Updates. Right now, I have them off. Should I turn them back on? Also, if I were to reboot again later, would this issue with not being about to start Windows reoccur?
I doubt it will happen again, but there are no guarantees, your machine is infected, this happens randomly sometimes when changes are made to a system, let's continue on with the combofix script we have more cleaning to do.
