Hello, I am having a lot of problems with my computer. A major one is that I cannot run any .exe programs. I downloaded the DDS and Hijackthis to my desktop and tried to run both. However, it just pops up the "Open With" window and asks me to choos a program to use to open this file. Please let me know what I need to do to get these to run. I have recently installed Windows service pack 3…maybe that caused some problems? Thanks, Chris
WhooHooo!!! You are awesome! One of the Rkills worked! I think it was the .com one. I was able to now download and run the HiJackThis program…couldn't get the DDS to run. Attached is the log. Did you need the Rkill log too?

Also, per the suggestion on the link you sent, I also downloaded & ran the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It found 9 infected Objects. I wasn't sure if you want me to quarantine them or not. I have not. I can always rerun the scan if you need me to quanrantine them. The HiJackThis program was run before the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

What do I do next?

WhooHooo!!! You are awesome! One of the Rkills worked!

That's exactly what the guide is for.

——————————

Please update and run MBAM asap (so you don't get reinfected) as outlined below.

You want to quarantine / fix all that is found.

also fix these using HJT:

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [jiliecyk] C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\ytstxxwoa\aqpjiittssd.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [jiliecyk] C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\ytstxxwoa\aqpjiittssd.exe (User 'Default user')

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

—————————

Download TFC to your desktop, it will clean out all the temp files on your system.

Open the file and close any other windows.
It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

——————

Next….

Scan for malware:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
Note: –>Do not run a full scan with MBAM. It is not required or needed.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

OK, please do this:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

    You have SP3

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please let me know.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
5.Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

MrC
Ok, I downloaded the combo fix, disabled my Mcaffe and ran it. It brought up a blue window saying it was starting the combofix and it also said it could not install a dll…I didn't catch what dll it was. It made it through creating the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console and said it was going to continue scanning and about a minute later, my system crashed with a blue screen. When I rebooted, the Microsoft brought up a window which said "You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused Windows to stop unexpectedly. This type of error is referred to as a "stop error." A stop error requires you to restart your computer" I didn't run the Combofix again…not sure if I should and I also did not run anything else. I would like you direction before continuing. Also, I thought I should have actually added the MalwareBytes log which actually found & cleaned the infected files….instead of the one that I ran a second time which said it was all clear. When I boot it up, it does not stop to give me a choice. Do you want me to still run the other items you listed or do I need to do something else first to get the Windows Recovery Console installed? Also when I booted it, it auto-installed 23 updates. Thanks, Chris
Yes please run the other two programs…that's OK.

Also when I booted it, it auto-installed 23 updates

Do you mean Windows updates??

—————————-

So far as the recovery console:
I would like you to have it installed before we fix the MBR…it can be used to recover in case something goes wrong.
Do you have the Windows XP installation CD for your computer or can you borrow one?

The link below gives you two ways to install the recovery console.
Method one is with the XP cd and the other is burning an iso image to a cd.

check here

To burn the .iso image to a cd:
Download and install Active@ ISO Burner
Install the program, and follow the next set of steps.

After you install Active@ ISO Burner, put a blank cd-r in your burner and double click on the rc.iso you downloaded and Active@ ISO Burner should automatically open up…..now click BURN.

MrC
Yes, it installed 23 Windows updates. I found the Reinstallation CD for MS Windows XP Professional SP 2 that came with our Dell computer. I started to install it, however, it said I have a newer version installed than what is on the CD. The CD has SP 2 and I had upgraded my computer to SP3. So I tried the iso burn thing. I followed the instructions and it burned something to the CD. I tried rebooting, but it is still not giving me the option for the recovery consule. Is there something else I need to do?

You just need to have the recovery console installed on your system (this is the preferred way) or on a cd.
You don't need both.
You can also use your Windows cd to get to the recovery console.

Here's a good tutorial on it:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/…l117.html#start

I found the Reinstallation CD for MS Windows XP Professional SP 2 that came with our Dell computer. I started to install it, however, it said I have a newer version installed than what is on the CD. The CD has SP 2 and I had upgraded my computer to SP3.

When you get that message just click OK and it should bring you to the next window that asks you if you want to install the recovery console….click Yes

Here's how To install the Recovery Console:

Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive. If it starts up just close it out.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, copy and paste or type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears. The Windows Setup Dialog Box describes the Recovery Console option. To confirm the installation, click Yes.
Restart the computer. The next time that you start your computer, "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" appears on the startup menu.

===========================================================

So I tried the iso burn thing. I followed the instructions and it burned something to the CD. I tried rebooting, but it is still not giving me the option for the recovery consule. Is there something else I need to do?

The computer must be set to boot from the CD first. For information on how to do that….click HERE.

Let me know, MrC
Ok, I was able to get the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console loaded from the cd and was able to restart and select it. What's next?
