Removed the toolbar, thanks for the info. IE is running but still unable to access any locations through the saved Favorites. Is that normal with the changes?
No that isn't normal Have a look at Tools>Folder Options>File types Scroll way down to URL Internet Shortcut 'Opens With' should be Internet Explorer If not, select Change, then select it from the list of programs. Updating to IE8 will fix it as well (IE8 is much better) Let me know if that resolves it.
Won't let me. There are 32 files types that don't have an extension assigned, of that 32, 15 of them are URL files plus the one labeled just Internet Shortcuts.
you looking in My Documents > Tools > Options > file types? what happens when you scroll down to URL Internet shortcut? and choose "Internet explorer"? what does it say in the bottom window? can you press the "change" button? what happens when you do?
Actually I was looking through Control Panel > Admin Tools > Tools > Folder Options > File Types I have now gone through My Docs as you stated but have the same results. There is not a type labeled URL Internet Shortcuts There is a type labeled Internet Shortcuts It has a logo next to it which is a blue e over a sheet of paper but then is states NONE next to that for the extension. When highlighting that file type it does not give me the option to change. I can click Advanced which takes me to another window and can "Edit" that file. It shows in each box: Action: Open the application used to perform action rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l Use: DDE is checked Application: shdocvw Topic: System
oh you haven't scrolled down the window far enough keep scrolling down almost to the end till you find URL in the left window > then Internet shortcuts in the right window in the underneath window it should say Internet explorer
Found URL in the left window, the right window states URL file Which I highlight it, it shows the details for the URL extension as opens with Internet Explorer. Which I click change it shows Open With and is highlighted on Shell Doc Object and Control Library. I click on Internet Explorer right above that, click OK and it goes back to Folder Options but does not let me click Apply only close. This does not change IE and when I reopen the Folder Options everything is as it was when I began. None of the changes saved.
downloaded to desktop opened and it began extracting files, when finished window opened as iesetup.exe - Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHWAPI.dll
Hi,

You only have Service Pack one installed on your PC, that's why the error message.

You should be at service pack 3

(why do you only have SP1?)

The service packs contain very important security patches that you must have installed, or you will get reinfected in no time

Please update to Service Pack 2, then Service Pack 3, then reinstall IE8

please use the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

follow the download links for SP2 and SP3
Sorry for the delay in response I don't believe there have been any Windows Updates on the pc for several years!!! Needless to say, when I tried to update the Service Packs there were issues. Had to run an update for everything and it ended up being very time consuming. Anyway, am updated to SP 3, have downloaded and installed IE8 but now IE8 won't open at all! What do you need from me?
Please post a fresh DDS Log and attach.txt when you say IE8 won't open, what exactly happens? Did it install properly?
Everything seemed to install fine, no messages during download or install. I "reinstalled" IE8 after it wouldn't open on initial install, thinking that there may have been an error, but same problem again. When double-click desktop icon for IE8, hour glass pops up for about 15 seconds and then nothing happens. Also tried opening through Start menu but same thing.
