popup tabs, just-in-time debugger, random crashes

I've had some problems with viruses and/or trojans from DeviantArt before, and apparently so have others. I've been able to remove them in the past with HijackThis and the guidance of Trendmicro techsupport. The previous times, however, the offending files were located in my Documents and Settings. I haven't found anything suspicious located there this time, so I'm not sure where to check next.
Like with prior infections, problems often occur following Adobe Acrobat breifly trying to launch itself on its own. Another issue that's occuring, but has not happened on my computer during previous infections, is the continuous popping-up of just-in-time debugger, which I do not know how to use, nor if I should use it.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hello Linz and welcome to WhatTheTech. Please follow these guidelines:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the β€œAll clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted.
  • Any underlined text in my posts indicates a clickable link.
  • You should print any instructions I give you for ease of use and reference.
  • If you have any questions at all, please stop and ask before proceeding.
πŸ–ΌClick to load external image (Posted Image) Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Hi Linz,

πŸ–ΌClick to load external image (Posted Image) Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log
I tried running ComboFix; however, when I double click on the desktop icon, all I receive is the message "ComboFix.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." (I tried downloading from the second link, but I only get a message that my computer doesn't have the program to open that file.) Edit: I did have all of my virus/spyware protection that I'm aware of disabled when I attempted to run ComboFix
Linz,

Delete any instances of ComboFix from your desktop and download a new copy (Make sure to save it on your desktop). Then do this:

πŸ–ΌClick to load external image (Posted Image) Run ComboFix using these instructions:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste the following bolded text into the run box & click OK.
"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
The log says that I do not have the Recovery Console installed, though I did click "yes" to have it do so each time when prompted (the first time it failed to install, then Combofix rebooted the computer, after which I received another prompt to download it, and again clicked "yes". The scan proceeded after the second time, so I assumed it had downloaded successfully.)

Hi Linz,

πŸ–ΌClick to load external image (Posted Image) Lets try to install the Recovery Console again:
  • Download this file and save it on your desktop
  • Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, you should drag it on top of the ComboFix icon and let your mouse button go. This is shown in the following image:
πŸ–ΌClick to load external image (Posted Image)
  • ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.
  • Once the Windows Recovery Console has finished installed, ComboFix will open a prompt stating that it was installed and asking if you would like to proceed with scanning your computer - Select "No"
πŸ–ΌClick to load external image (Posted Image) Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above File::

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Please include the following in your next post:
  • ComboFix log
The window shown in this attachment comes up when I attempt to drag the Recovery Console onto the Combofix icon. From this, I'm not sure if the file has been transferred successfully or not.

Yes, and sorry– things have been a little hectic and I haven't had the time to run another scan. I hope to achieve that tonight though, and thank you for your patience thus far; I know my replies haven't exactly been timely.

Hi Linz,

πŸ–ΌClick to load external image (Posted Image) Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the results.
πŸ–ΌClick to load external image (Posted Image) Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan. Click HERE to see how to disable the most common antivirus programs.
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.

The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take quite a long time to download.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, adware, dialers, and other riskware
    • Archives
    • E-mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View report… at the bottom.
  • Click the Save report… button.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Change the Files of type dropdown box to Text file (.txt) and name the file KasReport.txt to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
Please include the following in your next post:
  • MBAM log
  • Kaspersky log
  • How is the computer running now?
Linz, It's been six days since I've heard from you. Please let me know what is going on. We are almost done here, but there are some important final steps that you need to take care of.
