About two weeks ago my computer got infected with antimalware doctor (I think). That took a while to get rid of but it seems I"m not done. Now I'm getting lots of redirects and extra IE windows opening that go first to 'directrdr' then onto a random website. Also, yesterday I had to restart my computer twice because it slowed so much it became unusable. Today it's also acting wierd and telling me it has to close programs I'm not running.

I tried to download the DDS file but it saves as an AutoCAD script file so here is the Hijackthis log. I haven't done anything other than run malwarebytes.

Thanks in advance for you help.

REVISED POST

Hello again jjkyota

You do have a couple of nasty infections showing in your log but don’t worry, we’ll do our best to get this sorted out.

I notice that you have no antivirus on your computer. I’ll give links to free antivirus programs once your computer is clean. Meanwhile, please only use the computer for downloading tools and posting the logs.

Run OTL

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    • netsvcs
      drivers32
      %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
      %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
      %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
      %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
      %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
      %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /180
      %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll
      CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won’t take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them in your next reply.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • All drives/partitions except C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Logs to include with next post:

OTL.txt
Extras.txt
Gmer.txt

Thanks

Satchfan
Thanks for the quick response and very clear directions. I'm having a problem posting so I"m going to try posting one log at a time…

Also, you asked that I not use this computer but unfortunately this is my work computer and it's the only option. The programs I will be using are Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, AutoCAD 2007, Adobe Acrobat, the Remote Desktop to access my company server, as well as the internet. I will do my best to keep it at a minimum. Please let me know how this will affect the process and I will work around it as best I can.

I cannot post the Extras log. I get the standard IE can't display this webpage message everytime I try. Hopefully adding it as an attachment will work. Thanks again for your help, Kristine

Hello jjkyota

There are quite a few infections on your computer so let’s start getting this cleared up.

First of all, your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version:

Click your start button, open Control panel.
• Locate the Java icon (it looks like a coffee cup)
• double click it to open it
• click the Update tab
• Click update now

Disable Spybot - Search and Destroy TeaTimer:

You have Spybot’s TeaTimer running on your computer. Although this was a very good program, there are more effective options available now which I will advise you of when your computer is clean. Meanwhile, Spybot’s TeaTimer can interfere when trying to clean up your computer so please temporarily disable it.

To do this, right click the running icon on the taskbar at the bottom right of your screen and click Resident Protection to remove the check mark. You can re-enable it by doing the same again.

Run OTL

  • Double click on the icon to run it.
  • Copy/paste ALL the following text written inside the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click OK.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.
  • If the machine reboots, the log will be located at C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log, where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.

Download ComboFix from the following location:

Link

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

    [external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    [external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
Note: Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it will produce a log. Please include the ComboFix.txt in your next reply. It can be found at C:\ComboFix.txt

Finally, please tell me if you recognise this: C:\Documents and Settings\Kristine K\Application Data\Volts

Have you installed Shutdown/Restart Controller and Battery Monitor

Please include these logs and let me know how your computer is running:

Satchfan
Hi Satchfan.

I had a bit of a hiccup following your directions. Java would not update. It said it was ready to download but displayed 0% downloaded for almost 20 minutes before I cancled it. Same thing the second time. I just tried again after running OTL and Combofix but now it says there is a problem with my internet settings. Should I just uninstall then install again? I'll wait for your instructions on that.

Spybot was not in my system tray and I could not figure out how to do what you requested. Instead I stopped the process 'Teatimer.exe'. After running OTL it popped back in my system tray and I was able to uncheck what you asked.

Here is the OTL log:

You asked about this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Kristine K\Application Data\Volts
I believe this is some software I downloaded a couple years ago. Not something I ever used and I thought I removed it with the add/remove programs but it seems it's still there.

You also asked:
'Have you installed Shutdown/Restart Controller and Battery Monitor'
I don't know what this is.

My computer is running better so far. I have not seen the directrdr redirect and I did a bunch of searches to try and make it happen. The speed of my computer seems to be back to normal as well but I'll have to see how that goes for the rest of the day.
The one thing I did notice is twice I've been on a webpage (this one the second time) and I suddenly get redirected to a dell seach page telling me it can't find the page I was looking for. This has happened for awhile and I don't know if it's part of what my computer was infected with or not.

I did also have a question, all the stuff that's infected my computer, do you know if it's possible that it would have also infected our server? It's running fine I'm just wondering if it may cause problems later?

Thanks again for your help. I'll be at this computer for a couple more hours today then not again until monday morning. Have a great weekend!
Kristine
Kristine Glad to hear that things are running a bit better, I'll look at all the information you have given and will have a reply with further information and instructions ready for you when you return. Kind regards Satchfan
Hi jjkyota

Re TeaTimer

It is best to disable this until we are finished cleaning your computer. If you have a problems again do it this way:• Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
• On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
• Uncheck the Resident TeaTimer (Protection of overall system settings) active box.
• Click on the System Startup icon in the List
• Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and click OK at any prompts.
• If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click Allow Change when prompted.
• Exit Spybot S&D.
(When we are finished, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup).

Flush the DNS cache
  • Go to Start > Run > type: cmd
  • Press OK or hit Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type or copy/paste: ipconfig /flushdns (note the space between “..g /f…” it needs to be there)
  • Hit Enter.
  • You will get a confirmation that the flush was successful.
  • Close the command box.

Re Java

Should I just uninstall then install again?

Yes. The version you have is old and therefore vulnerable to infections.

Install Version 6 Update 20, from here

Satchfan
Hi Satchfan, Teatimer has been disabled, Java installed, and the DNS cache was cleared. The last OTL log I sent was the complete log. I opened it then pressed 'ctrl A' to select all. There was not a header, only started with what I posted. The log below also doesn't have a header, not sure why? I'm happy to attach the file if that would be helpful. ========== OTL ========== Process explorer.exe killed successfully! Teatimer has been disabled, Java installed, and the DNS cache was cleared.

Good work. I think we’re nearly there.

Run OTL

  • Double click on the icon to run it.
  • Copy/paste ALL the following text written inside the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

    :OTL
    PRC - C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe (Microsoft Corporation)
    DRV - (mercury) – C:\WINDOWS\system32\mercury.sys ()

    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL log (don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time)

Run Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

I noticed that you had MBAM on your system: if you no longer have it, you can download it from here: • Start Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware and update it, (“Update” tab}
• Once it is updated, click on “Scanner” tab, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Please also remember the Malwarebytes’ and OTL logs.
