Hi-

I'm having difficulty with a redirect virus. It normally happens when using Google and doesn't happen with all topic searches. I'm having an additional problem that I'm not sure is associated with the redirect virus. My McAfee software alerts me intermitently (a few times a day, more or less depending) that my firewall is turned off and my computer is susceptible.

I've tried a variety of spyware software and have had no luck.

Following is the hijackthis log. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • It doesn't take long to run, once it is finished move onto the next step

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Extract the file and run it.
  • Reboot your machine and see if the infection is gone
Hi-

Thank you for your quick response, I greatly appreciate it.

I ran both tools as outlined below and then rebooted. Everything seemed fine so I opened a coule of other programs and continued to test it. After I opened Microsoft Outlook, Google started redirecting me again. I don't know if this is coincidence or not.

Following is the updated Hijackthis Log:

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Vista Users

To enable the viewing of hidden and protected system files in Windows Vista please follow these steps:

Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package. If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi- I'm in a holding mode right now. There were two pop-ups when I began running combo fix. At the top of the box the first says: Error - Win 32 Only Incompatible OS. ComboFix only works for workstations with Windows 2000 and XP The second box is: Disclaimer of Warranty on Software (10-06-21.03) Are both of these expected? Thanks- Jeff
Combofix works on Windows as long as you're not running 64 Bit and I don't see that anywhere. Keep moving on and we'll see.
Hi-

Thanks again for your continued help. I ran Combofix and the log follows.

A coule of other things, I tested Google and while the problem is better it is not completely gone. I am intermittently redirected to sites like "monster marketplace". As a for instance, in the subject bar as IE is going to the website I've clicked on it says "http://pursuit2u.net/index.php?ws=cheap+car+stereos". This was the result of a google search for car stereos and then clicking on the link to the crutchfield website.

My computer is acting a little odd. As I type this there is an hour glass that flickers as I type or backspace.

Here is the log:

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

c:\windows\system32\ebec.sys

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If virscan.org is too busy you can try these.

Hi- I ran this through virscan.org and I received the message: Error: Can't find upload file. I also ran it through virusscan.jotti.org and it said "file is empty. 0 bytes" Thanks- Jeff
Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
That was the first time during this that I thought I might have a stroke. I believe I just saw the "blue screen of death"… isn't that what it's called? I did as instructed and the computer ran combo fix. It rebooted and after reboot combo fix started to run again. I suddenly got a blue screen that said that windows had detected an error and shut down. It went on to say something about "if this is the first time you are seeing this screen"… that is as far as I got; the computer rebooted itself. Upon the second start-up I got a message saying "the system has recovered from a serious error" I clicked through to get what the report said and got the following error report contents: The following files will be included in this error report C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFRE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERba83.dir00\Mini062210-01.dmp C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFRE~1\LOCALS~1\TempWERba83.dir00\sysdata.xml I was not able to copy the combofix log. Is it possible to find it somewhere? Thanks again- J
Thanks- This is what I found. Hopefully this is it?
