Second computer with Win32.PornPopUp

I just very recently created a thread here involving an infection of one of our two laptops with Win32.PornPopUp. Now, after apparently resolving the issue on THAT computer, I need to move on to THIS one. Spybot found it the other night after a routine scan, and as I didn't recognize it, I decided to look it up. Upon discovering that apparently Spybot can't remove it on its own, and it reappears after restart, I immediately rebooted and ran another scan without doing anything else. The only entry it found was, sure enough, Win32.PornPopUp. As with the other computer, I'm running Windows XP, I think SP3, with SUPERAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, Spybot w/ Tea Timer running, McAfee Site Advisor, and Avast! Antivirus. Here are the two logs from DDS, just after turning the computer on just now.
We'll go at it just like the other one.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

All righty, thanks again for replying so soon! Let's get this "party" started. I've already run ATF-Cleaner, but I'll run it again real quick after closing Firefox (I was using Chrome on the other computer, for the record), just to be on the safe side. I just wanted to drop a quick line and let you know that sometimes MBAM can take a while to run, so it might be a little bit before I can get you the log. Out of curiosity, why should you uncheck those certain findings in MBAM? I only ask because I would hate to find out at some point on a previous scan I let it remove something I shouldn't have.
Ahh, that makes a great deal of sense! The scan finished, admittedly much quicker than I was expecting, even for a quick scan. It didn't find anything at all, which I'm not sure whether is bad or good. Here's the log, just the same: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 4216 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 6/19/2010 4:06:07 PM mbam-log-2010-06-19 (16-06-07).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 121801 Time elapsed: 10 minute(s), 29 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected)
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
That's…Interesting. Using EITHER link there, my McAfee Site Advisor gives me a warning of a potentially hazardous download; that in their tests, people reported it being considered adware, spyware, or other unwanted programs. It didn't do this on the other computer. I've canceled the download just to be sure. Is this just Site Advisor warning me that ComboFix can be dangerous if not properly used?? It must not have warned me on the other computer because Site Advisor isn't compatible with Chrome.
I kind of figured it was McAfee being weird, as usual. How does one go about disabling Site Advisor? It's the only thing I have of McAfee on this computer.
Go to Control Panel/Add or Remove and uninstall it. It will be listed either separately as McAfee SiteAdvisor or be part of McAfee Security Center which if you click the uninstall will then ask you what parts you want to uninstall.
All right then, finally got done with ComboFix. Sorry that took a while. I had to run the scan a second time, as for some reason, part of Spybot hadn't turned off when I told it to, and ComboFix froze. It still rebooted the computer, but didn't give me a log upon restart. :smack: Sometimes computers just drive me clean up the wall. Here's the log. Let me know if there's anything I can do to try and get a log from that first scan for you:

This computer looks good to me.

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it's impossible to be 100% sure that any machine is clean.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read How to Prevent Malware:
All right then! As per the other computer, I'm going to go ahead and shut this down for a few, then restart and run Spybot. I'll let you know if my little friend returns after the scan completes.
