My computer seems to be infected as it does not let me execute commands frequently and takes forever to load applications, even to type this in is verrrrry slow. I downloaded DDS and have paste the results of DDS below and have attached the other file as instructed. I hope that once again you can help. I have recently updated my antivirus software (Kapersky) and scanned the computer but it reported no infections, but took about 6 hours to scan. Thank you. Hi,

I will be helping you on removing malwares on your computer. Log research takes time, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Do not install/uninstall anything on your computer unless advised.
  • Do not run any other scanning tools other than those instructed for you to use.
  • Follow the instructions on the order they are given.
  • Stay with this thread until advised when your computer is clean. Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean a clean computer.
  • If you are being helped regarding this problem on another forum please advice us so that we can close this thread.
  • If you do not reply within 3 days after my last response, I will be asking you whether you still need assistance and if you still don't reply within 48 hours then the topic will be closed.
  • And lastly, if you have any questions, please ask before proceeding with any of the advised fixes.

Your log shows signs of a trojan infection. The capabilities of this particular trojan include keylogging and password stealing so I advise you to take all precautions to safeguard your accounts, passwords, and sensitive data. If you have entered any credit card details or use your computer for financial/banking transactions, you should notify your banks and financial institutions that you may have been a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts. For more information, please read How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware. I also recommend that you change your online passwords for email, banks, etc., immediately – from a clean computer. It bears repeating to change passwords from a clean computer only.

Many experts believe that once a computer has been infected with this type of Trojan, it is best to reformat and reinstall the Operating System. The reason is that even after cleaning, there may be some remnants left in the system. It is hard to discern how much damage has been done. Only you can decide whether it would be best to reformat and start over. We can proceed with the cleanup process if you prefer. If you decide to reformat, be sure save your important data to backup media but make sure that you scan it all before you put it back on a clean system. Please read the following: When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

If you wish to continue with the clean up, please proceed with the following:

You have µTorrent, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

P2P (File Sharing ) programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/d/security-centra…-p-id-theft-103

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

I would recommend that you uninstall µTorrent, via Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs.

However, if you do not wish to remove this program please be advised not to use the said program during the course of cleaning your machine.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan…click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

To post in your next reply:
1. VirSCAN log.
2. GMER log.
It looks like I have no other choice but to reinstall. I take it the links within your reply will help me with doing this? There are 3 laptops in the house sharing the same network from the infected computer, one is windows based the other two are apple macs, do you think that they ALL will be infected too or just the windows laptop?? Thank you.
Hi,

Yes, you could use this as a guide -> http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

and also this -> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Reformat…amp;hl=reformat

If you need further assistance on doing a back up and reformat, then create a new topic in our Microsoft Windowsâ„¢ forum.

Our tools only works with Windows based system so my advise would be to run an AV scan on your Mac then post the logs and let's see what we can do.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

To keep your operating system up to date visit
  • Secunia Software inspector to check your program update status.
  • Microsoft Windows Update .
1. It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them

Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.

2. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
3. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

4. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

5. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

6. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

7. SpywareBlaster - Download and install SpywareBlaster. This program prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware and other potentially unwanted programs.

8. Protect your computer from internet threats with SandboxIE. This program isolates Internet Explorer from the rest of your operating system, 'sandboxing' it away - so malicious websites can't do damage to the rest of your system. There is a Getting Started guide on their website.

9. Some excellent free firewalls. Note: Use only one firewall at a time.
Agnitum Outpost Firewall
Online Armor Personal Firewall

10. And finally, please read these excellent articles:
Malware: Help prevent the Infection by Sandi Hardmeier,
Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing

For more safe computing tips please read the guide by Rorschach112 on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here.
Just to let you know that I have reformatted this computer and follow all your instructions and advice. It now seems to be working great and is now so fast again. Thank you for your help. In relation to my other laptop that was connected to the same network so I run a check on it and post it here as well to make sure it is not infected? Or should I open a new thread? Once again MEGA thanks.
Hi, Those are Mac's, correct? Might as well post it here but I can't promise you anything as we mostly deal with infected windows. Let's take a peek at it. :)
No the laptop I am talking about is windows. Here is the result of the DDS file:

Hi,

You are no longer using Norton, correct?

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

–Next–

Please go to VirSCAN
  • Click on Browse.
  • On the File Upload window, copy/paste the text below into the File name box:
    c:\program files\AutoRun.exe
  • Click Upload. Allow the file to be scanned. If it says already scanned – click Reanalyze Now
Repeat the procedure with the following file:
c:\windows\system32\CdI5T.drv

Please post the results in your next reply

To post in your next reply:
1. Defogger log.
2. GMER log.
This is a follow on from a previous thread which was closed yesterday. I have carried out the instructions, please find below the results as requested. Sorry did not get back to you sooner but work gets in the way. Thank you.

Hi,

Please read through these instructions to familiarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

——————————————————————–
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty in properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link - How to Disable your Security Programs
——————————————————————–
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making Internet Explorer the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with the combofix log.
