The computer is running slow, the websites are redirected, and i am getting fake alerts of problems which i feel are coming from the infection. i tried to post a topic on this site from his computer, but it shuts down ie whenever i submit! i had to send the hijackthis info via an email to my computer and have copied it below:

Hi

If you need to transfer any programs to your husbands computer via USB, run this program first:

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe from HERE and save it to your desktop.

Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
Reboot your computer when done.

  • If you have an active internet connection, copy/paste the links below into your browser, don't click them or the rogue might redirect.
  • If you don't have an active internet connection, download the tools from another machine, and transfer them to the affected machine via USB flash drive.
Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)

There are 3 different versions.
If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr
Note:
You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected.
Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message.
Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries.
You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

At this point, you should now be able to run analysis tools.

Once the tool has run, do NOT reboot the machine, and then try to run DDS and GMER.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.

Please download DDS from either of these links

LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
  • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

If you have no success with rkill, try this program:

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).
Cat Byte, What a pain i am having over this. I have tried to attach the dds and attach txt files, but i get the message below that the upload failed. you are not permitted to upload this type of file. Not sure why. Could i just cut and paste it for you to see?

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from either of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Cat Byte, during the combo fix scan, a blue screen appeared and the screen said that a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down. BAD_POOL_CALLER So, what should i do now? I had to shut down the computer and start it back up. Should I try again?
Yes,

Please delete the copy that you have on your desktop

Please download a fresh copy but rename it to combo.com before you save it to your desktop

then boot into safe mode and run it in safe mode…if ComboFix needs to reboot, make sure you reboot back into safe mode so it will create a log.

make sure you have file extensions showing before you save combofix as combo.com

  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY repeatedly,
  • this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
  • go into your usual account
below is the combo txt that you requested that i do in safe mode:

Hi,

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

KillAll::

FileLook::
c:\windows\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\SKUO5(2).dll

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\Administrator.PETE-05CK9PEMS6\IETldCache
c:\documents and settings\NetworkService.NT AUTHORITY.000\IETldCache
c:\program files\UnSpyPC

DDS::
Trusted Zone: musicmatch.com\online

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
Cat Byte,

The combofix scan was done in safe mode as i tried 2 or 3 times and i kept getting a blue screen. the other scans were no problem.

what is the status of your husband's computer at the moment? please give me as much detail as possible
I just went down and as soon as i opened ie, i got a box from mcafee stating that they blocked Redirected Hosts which was in C:/Windows/System 32/drivers/etc/hosts and mcafee asked if i wanted it removed and i said yes. after that, the computer seems good. we didn't have sound on songs or videos until now. it had seemed like the sound had been disabled for that. But now there is music . i wasn't redirected when going from site to site and it was moving along quicker than yesterday. I exited ie and then went back on and still no warnings from mcafee. polly
