Hello
I am not sure this belongs here or in the Internet Explorer forum. I am currently running Windows XP Media Center SP3. I have malwarebytes and adaware as antispyware and AVG as antivirus programs. I use primarily Firefox as my default browser but occasionally still use Internet Explorer. I noticed that while watching a few videos on Hulu today, the picture seemed to stutter. Sound progressed fine. I ran a Malwarebytes scan and an Adaware scan to check for any spyware that may be interfering. I have also check to see if there were any updates that I may have missed to Firefox that may be causing this. I received negative results all around. So I thought it may just be a temp glitch in Firefox so I opened IE to try viewing there. It started to open my home page but never made it there instead opening my default search engine with the home page listed in the results. (yahoo.com btw). So I choose to try to open the page from the results list. Then I get a page stating that there was a connection problem (similiar to those displayed when the connection is down. I clicked on diagnose the problem and I was referred to contact that manufacturer. I get this same result every site I try to go to. If I type the page in the address bar, I get the search engine results list and then I click on the link and get the connection page. I also uninstalled – rebooted and reinstalled IE– with the same results. I have no problem going to sites in Firefox. I am wondering if there might be a little "imp" laying low on my computer that the scans don't see. I would like to be able to use IE again at least once and a while. Thank you for looking into this matter. The scans are paste below with the exception of the attach file. At the bottom of my screen it states that I have aready uploaded 2.17 of the 2.0 mb.(Previous issue) However, under the attachment management – there are none listed. It will not let me upload the file and I can find no place to clear out the previous message.

Hello,
Welcome to WhatTheTech. My name is mowman, and I will be helping you fix your problems.

If you do not make a reply in 3 days, we will have to close your topic.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the Options button at the top bar of this topic and Track this topic. The topics you are tracking can be found by clicking on My Topics at the top of any page.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:

•Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
•If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
•Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
•Please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply.
Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post
•Please be aware that I am still in training, and all of my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
•This may cause a delay in response time, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.
•I will reply back shortly with instructions.
Thany you for taking the time to look at my issue mowman. I await your reply and instructions on this frustrating issue.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
I don't know what that program does but it crashed every time I tried to run it (total of 4 times) and locked my entire system up every time as well. I would have to do a hard reset each time. I could not even get the crt-alt-del to bring up my task manager. I am finally now able to get back into my browser as long as I don't attempt to run gmer. What is my next step?
Please try to run GMER again this time uncheck devices as well

If still unable to run,try in safe mode.See here if you need instructions how to boot into safe mode.
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
OK after what seemed like forever– the scan completed with unchecking the devices box. Although I still could not open any browsers or anything to post this after the scan was run – I needed once again to perform a hard reset. I still am unable to attach anything to this posting. It continues to say that 2.17mb of 2mb attachment space used and when I try to upload anything I get this message: Error Upload failed. The file was larger than the available space

So below is the copy and pasted results of the scan log.

Hello mickey7,please do the following

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Here are the results of the Combofix:

Hello mickey7,please do the following

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    http://forums.whatthetech.com/Internet_Explorer_t112100.html

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also tell me how the computer is running now.
I ran the combo fix. It looked good and then there was a popout menu that stated needed to make sure I was connected to the internet to upload the scan results. The screen looked as if it was in process of completing a reboot. No toolbars, systrays, icons etc. Just the desktop picture and the popout and combix command window. Since there was no other option, I clicked ok. Combo window stated upload in progress then a bunch of pound signs appeared then 100%. It stayed like that for quite awhile and nothing happened – I clicked the command window closed by the x – no change – so again I had to do a hard reset in order to complete the reboot and get my icons back. But then there is no results log to post. As for the computer as a whole. It is a little faster. Typing sometimes does not appear in real time.. There is a slight delay. Not a particular concern. IE has web sites appearing again. Thanks so very much this was the major concern. As for Hulu; both in IE and Firefox, 90% of the time I get an error message that states the video cannot be played check your connection. Never happened before. And the rare time a video does appear it constantly times out and has to rebuffer and never buffers 100% That has rarely happened before. I can understand if I were still on dial up but not broadband. Did we affect any plugins or flash etc….. Finally, all web pages in firefox appear as they normally do except this one. (at least those that I have been on tonight) at the top of the page in the title bar it states: "Replying in Internet Explorer- What the Tech - Mozilla Firefox" has this always been and I have just never noticed it??? What is the next step? I forgot to mention my avg issue… I should have done this earlier because for awhile now my daily scans by my antivirus have returned complete 0 in everything. I know that should be a good sign, but I used to get the cookies and such from just being online etc.. Thanks again for all your help.
Hello mickey7.

Did combofix produce a log?If not please locate it at C:\ComboFix.txt and post it in your next reply

Replying in Internet Explorer- What the Tech - Mozilla Firefox" has this always been and I have just never noticed it???

This always happens because internet explorer is the title of your topic.

As for Hulu; both in IE and Firefox, 90% of the time I get an error message that states the video cannot be played check your connection

Does this happen for all videos e.g youtube or just on hulu
No it did not produce a visible log like the first time Combofix was run. I am at work now and will double check to see if there is a new log on the C:. and check on those other items when I return home. Thanks for the prompt replies.
Below ComboFix is addressed.

In terms of the videos.. I tried 3 different samples on youtube. All three had minor video stutters but no problems with sound. The same can be said of abc.com and cbs.com (although cbs had a little more than minor video issues). I think that should give you a sampling. Again sound had no problems at all on any site.

Finally, there are still slight delays in typing and the drop down and right click menus vanish in Firefox.

Here is a ComboFix Log. Not sure if it is the original one or the second one. I also now have a 27+MB ComboFix Folder on my C: as well. I folder called Qoobox is there too and contains the same info as the ComboFix folder. Outside the folder is where I found the log file. There is a CF-Submit.htm file outside the folder which goes to here:

- - ComboFix - - -

Submit malware to Bleeping Computer for analysis.

Copy/Paste the filepath below into the box above and click Send.
