My email account was apparently hacked and all my contacts received a spam email using my account. I have run hijack this and have a log file. I have changed my password and security questions. Can someone help me with additional steps. Thanks.
Hello and :welcome:

I will be helping you on removing malwares on your computer. Log research takes time, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Do not install/uninstall anything on your computer unless advised.
  • Do not run any other scanning tools other than those instructed for you to use.
  • Follow the instructions on the order they are given.
  • Stay with this thread until advised when your computer is clean. Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean a clean computer.
  • If you are being helped regarding this problem on another forum please advice us so that we can close this thread.
  • If you do not reply within 3 days after my last response, I will be asking you whether you still need assistance and if you still don't reply within 48 hours then the topic will be closed.
  • And lastly, if you have any questions, please ask before proceeding with any of the advised fixes.

If you are using Windows Vista or 7, you will need to right click and choose "Run as Administrator" to run the tools we will use.

OTL:
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Copy and paste the following bold text into the box under Custom Scan

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    /md5stop
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of the OTL.txt and post it with your next reply along with the Extras.txt log.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan…click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
      [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

To post in your next reply:
1. OTL logs.
2. GMER log.
Inzanity, Thank you so much for your willingness to help me with this problem. I have completed step one and have the two log files. However, when I tried to unzip the file in step 2 I get the following error message. C:\Windows\system32\config\system: The system cannot find the file specified I do not know what to do now. I am running Windows 7. My totally computer illiterate mind makes me think it may be something to do with 32 bit vs. 64. Thanks again. Rhizoo
Just got this reply and did not want to leave you hanging. I had to work today so it will be this evening before I am back to that computer. Will post the two logs then. Thanks
Inzanity,
I am back at the laptop and here are my logs. Thanks

Hi,

You may have some corrupted system files. Let's continue checking for malware.

You have two anti virus running on your computer, AVG9, ThreatFire. Running more than one anti virus at the same time does not only slow down your computer but provides less protection than they are programmed to do, due to the fact that they will be conflicting with each other rather than providing sufficient protection for your computer. Please uninstall one of your anti virus before proceeding with any of the fixes.

Hi,

So far I don't see any malware. How is your computer? Any other problems?

Let's do another scan, this one may take a while to finish.

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Right click Internet Explorer or Firefox then choose "Run as Administrator" to run the program.

NOTE: After scanning with Kaspersky, close your browser then run it without administrator privileges for your browsing.

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
To post in your next reply:
1. Kaspersky log.
2. Regarding your computer.
Since you said this one might take awhile, I will do it tomorrow. It is bed time here. My computer runs fine. It wasn't that it was not running good, but that my email had been hacked and I want to make sure that nothing remains in my computer from that hacking. And too, it may be that they hacked my email from my desktop. if this one turns out ok, would you be willing to take a look at the same logs from my desktop. I appreciate your help.
