Hi guys, i've read through some of the older posts on this topic. And have come to the conclustion that i need to: Restart the computer using the Windows Recovery Console type in cd c:\windows\system32\drivers Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP). Update the virus definitions. Run a full system scan. Delete any values added to the registry The only problem with that is that when i try to run the recovery console it gives me a message saying not found hard drive ensure power to hard drive…… and then F3 to continue to boot windows Many thanks if you can help Jake
Hi jakelaptop, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).

You definately do not want to do that.

Go HERE to get a random named copy of GMER. Scroll down to the Download section and click Download EXE. Save it to your desktop.

Before scanning with GMER, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

  • Right click on the file you downloaded and click "Run as Administrator". If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

*If GMER will not complete please run it in Safe Mode.*

Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Right click on OTL.exe and select "Run as adminstrator to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • In the window under Custom Scans/Fixes copy and paste the following

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Please post back with
  • GMER log
  • both OTL logs
Thanks
Sorry for the long time in replying, been away for the week. So i tried to run a GMER scan it seemed to finish, but it wouldn't let me save the file, it just crashed over and over again. Tried running it in safe mode. But windows wouldn't let the software run. Since that time i had a windows malicious removal download tool for May. And upon restarting it took its time and then found the Backdoor.Tidserv. It gave a message that it had been partially removed and futher action required. This gave me a link to do what i posted in my original post. About 20 mins later my norton internet security 2010 popped up a message notifying me that it had found the virus but manual removel was needed. After going through the options on norton it gave me the option to completely remove the file infected. :-) So i removed it by locating the file in My Computer and also using nortons delete and quarentine function i've also deleted it from quarentine. The file i deleted was….. C:\System Volume Information\restore{a893674-085c-4723-b63e-39928c5f4c89}\RP213\A0047307.sys I know you said not to do anything else but as windows found it by itself i thought i'd get rid of it while i could. Will this have solved my problem and will all traces off this damm thing be gone? Thanks Jake
Hi jakelaptop,

Without seeing some logs I can't say if the infection is completely gone.

C:\System Volume Information\restore{a893674-085c-4723-b63e-39928c5f4c89}\RP213\A0047307.sys

That was a detection in a System Restore point. It won't do anything or reinfect you unless you actually restored your computer to that point.

Try running GMER with only Sections and C:\ checked.

Run OTL with the instructions provided earlier and post both the logs it produces along with the GMER log (if it completed)

We'll go from there.

Thanks

Are you experiencing ay problems such as redirects of your browser or searches?

Thanks
No i'm not having any redirects, though norton always blocked the redirects. Norton is no longer blocking these. I've uninstalled them, why doesn't Java uninstall them when it updates to a new version? I'll just do a online scan Thanks

Hi jakelaptop,

The KASPERSKY software down loaded about 90MBs of data on my computer will that all be removed when i reboot my laptop?

"Removing the program

Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 files and anti-virus database required for its operation are stored in the folder for temporary files. Temporary files are usually deleted automatically by the operating system. You do not have to remove them manually."

We can empty the temporary files.

Next, Double click on OTL.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
  • Do Not copy the word CODE
  • please note the fix starts with the :
:Files

:Commands
[emptytemp]

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered.

why doesn't Java uninstall them when it updates to a new version?

Starting with java 6 update 10, the installer will remove versions 6-10 and newer when updating. Versions older than 6-10 still need to be uninstalled.

Any problems? If not we can clean up the tools we used.

From your desktop, please delete
  • any notepads/logs that we created

Open OTL then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTListIt wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

* Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
  • Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point
  • click create
* Remove old restore points

  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools.
  • Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run.
  • When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab.
  • On this tab you will find a section for System Restore.
  • If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it regularly.

Updates and upgrades

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 8.2.2 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. Since you are using Norton Internet Suite you should have most if not all of these. If you disabled any part of the suite to preform the scan please re-enabled them.

You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.
