I have a gateway laptop running XP. Recently, it stopped connecting to my network. First it would connect then it could not find any wireless networks. I thought that I had a virus or some spyware stuff on it so I ran the Ad-Aware and Spybot. Still does the same thing. So I decided to try a different wireless card, being the original is internal. I bought a belkin PCMCIA card, installed it and volaa, it found the network and connected….for about 10 minutes, then the same thing, could not find a network. So I got the restore CD's out, formatted the drive and reinstalled the OS, still nothing. It shows up fine in Device manager but will not connect/see the network. I have been working with/on computers for well over 15 years now and I have yet to be able to crack this problem. Any suggestions/help would be much appreciated
Hi and welcome to the WTT forums.
Sorry to hear of the problems with your wireless connectivity.
We need to establish if the problem is with one or more of the following:
1 your computer and or its network adapter
2 Your wireless access point/router/gateway
3 Your wiring/ISP/telecom company
Here's some suggestions for your consideration
A) Invite a chum to your premises with a known good wireless connecting laptop, and see if that machine has any success with seeing your wireless signal, and connecting to it and staying connected……..( you may be able to borrow another laptop for the test..) if the test machine has no problems with staying connected then its likely that we can assume that points 2 and 3 above are OK so we just need to trouble shoot your computer….
Please post back and let us know how you go….
4 make and model number of computer modem router/wireless access point will help us help you…..
5 Also are you using an encrypted broadcast signal with either WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryption?..
6 .please let us know the exact type of encyyption you are using..ie WPA PSK or whatever.
7 Are you broadcasting your SSID ? or have you disabled SSID broadcast?
8 Are you using Mac filtering?
9 Do you have a microfilter/splitter on each telephone socket in your household? ( to separate out the digital and analogue signal?)
10 Next it would be helpful if you opened a command prompt…Start> Run>CMD>Enter
and typed in at the DOS prompt
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
pressing Enter after each command….please note there is a space between the g and the / it needs to be there.
next at the DOS prompt copy and paste the following command
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
note the spaces, again they need to be there.
press the Enter Key.
Close the DOS box by typing
EXIT
and pressing the Enter key
Try your Internet again any improvement?
Finally if still no joy please open the command prompt again and at the DOS prompt type in
ipconfig /all
pressthe enter key
please copy and paste the output from this into your next reply…… if you want to conceal your Ip address its fine to edit some of this out with xxxxx's
Regards

One additional idea. Take your laptop to a place that has free wireless internet. A public library, McDonald's, Coffee Shop. See if it works there. If yes then the problem is probably the wireless router/modem.
Thanks for the fast response. I have two other laptops that are accessing the same network, they both connect and stay connected fine. I am using WPA2 encryption and my mac filtering is turned off. I am broadcasting my SSID. I am using a Belkin N Router. I am currently at work but I will get the info and post tomoorow or day after, Thanks
