About a month and a half ago my internet started coming and going. It seems to go offline for a few seconds every half minute or so. About a quarter of the time I open a page, it says "Connection Failed" or some variation of that. Thanks to whoever will take a look at this Hijack This log!

Hello jofekaan and welcome to WTT forum.

My name is Satchfan and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem. Please take note of the following which will make checking your machine easier:
• Please do not install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
• Please do not run any scans other than those requested
• Please follow all instructions in the order posted
• Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
• If you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
• The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
• Please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
Please note that I am still in training and my replies need to be checked by an expert in order for you to receive the best possible advice. This may result in a small delay between my posts but I shall try to keep this to a minimum.

I am looking through your log now and will reply as soon as possible.

Satchfan
Hello again jofekaan

There is nothing showing up in your HijackThis log but I’d like you to run a couple of more thorough scans.

Run OTL

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    • netsvcs
      %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
      /md5start
      eventlog.dll
      scecli.dll
      netlogon.dll

      %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
      CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won’t take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them in your next reply.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner

[external image: Posted Image]
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Logs to include with next post:

OTL.txt
Extras.txt
Gmer.txt

Thanks

Satchfan
I can't seem to get GMER installed. I unzipped it but when I click it an error comes up that says "C:\Windows\System32\config\system: The system can not find the file specified" I click "OK" and it brings me to GMER but I don't have the option to check or uncheck most of the boxes. Only "Services", "Registry", and "Files" can be unchecked.

Restore your Proxy settings

They could have been modified by malware and that's probably the reason why you are having problems with the Internet.

To restore the settings:

In Internet Explorer: Tools, -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck use a proxy server and check to Automatically detect settings.

In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options… -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> Settings under Connection, make sure No proxy is checked.

Please try running Gmer again. If you can’t uncheck the boxes, just run it as it is.

Please let me know if your internet is working any better.

Logs to include:

OTL.txt
Gmer.tx

Hmmm, it seems to be better but not completely. I still have connection problems but it's far less frequent. I'll try buying a new router since my buddy told me that it's most likely the cause. Thanks for all the help!
Hi jofekaan.

It’s your choice, of course, but I would suggest that you try one last scan before paying out money for a new router, which may or may not be the problem.

**Vista users - right click on the IE icon and run as administrator

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
Thanks

Run AVPTool by Kaspersky

This is another program from Kaspersky: it does what the Online scanner does, but it will also removes anything that it finds.

Please click here to download AVP Tool by Kaspersky.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode.

You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter
    .

  • Double click the setup file to run it.
  • Click Next to continue.
  • It will by default install it to your desktop folder. Click Next.
  • Hit OK at the prompt for scanning in Safe Mode.
  • It will then open a box. There will be a tab that says Automatic scan.
  • Under Automatic scan make sure these are checked.

  • System Memory
  • Startup Objects
  • Disk Boot Sectors.
  • My Computer.
  • Also any other drives (Removable that you may have)

After that click on Security level then choose Customize then click on the tab that says Heuristic Analyzer then choose Enable Deep rootkit search then choose ok.
Then choose OK again then you are back to the main screen.

  • Then click on Scan at the to right hand corner.
  • It will automatically neutralize any objects found.
  • If some objects are left un-neutralized then click the button that says Neutralize all
  • If it says it Cannot be Neutralized then choose the Delete option when prompted.
  • After that is done, click on the reports button at the bottom and save it with the file name Kas.
  • Save it somewhere convenient like your desktop and just post only the detected Virus\malware in the report - it will be at the very top under Detected. Post those results in your next reply.

Note: This tool will self-uninstall when you close it so please save the log before closing it.

Please remember to also include OTL.txt

Thanks
