Hi, My brother's laptop is seriously infected with multiple issues. The browser has been hijacked, and the Antivirus XP program keeps coming up and showing infection then taking him to a webpage asking for $49 to fix.

The browser (IE or Firefox) is sent to an unwanted page no matter what URL is entered into the address bar, so I am unable to reach this forum with the laptop directly.

First, no program could be started form the start menu. Message is shown indicating not enough permissions. I must go to the .exe file in Program files folder and right click "run as" When this is done, there is a box checked under user showing run with security. I uncheck the box, and the programs will run. I cannot change to Administrator, even though the user I am logged in as has administrator privledges. There is only one user on this machine.

And, the laptop cannot be restored to an earlier date. Tried multiple dated restore points, all result in message after reboot stating no changes made, system cannot be restored form that point.

I found a copy of MalWareBytes on the laptop and ran, finding 7 or 8 infections, which I removed. Small improvement. I believe this restored the Start Menu ability.

I ran ATFCleaner which was on the program, and also cleared the Java cahce.

Since I cannot log the laptop in to this forum, I am accessing it via my desktop. So, any downloads, or log file uploads, will need to be done here, with connection to the laptop through a USB jump drive.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ron Cobb

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, MBAM, SmitfraudFix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

If need be, download the tools needed to a flash drive or other removable media, and run them from the USB device.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

XP Users
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to ABCD.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

Double click on the ABCD.exe ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

**Note: If Combofix (ABCD) won't run from the desktop, try running it from the USB device.

——————————————————————–

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have the Windows Recovery Console pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package. Vista and Windows 7 users skip this part

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply using Copy/Paste.

Notes:

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Also please describe how your computer behaves in your next reply.
This laptop has Windows XP Professional, but I do not know how to determine if it is original, SP1 or SP2. I cannot log this computer onto the internet. But, when I go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, I see in the list that Windows has been updated regularly, with the latest update on April 15, 2010. Also, I see a program in the list titled "MSXML 4.0 SP2". Does this signal that the op sys is Win XP Pro SP2? Thanks
The laptop has AVG antivirus running, which is detected by ComboFix. I could not determine how to stop it, so I tried to uninstall it, but there is an error, and the uninstall does not complete - the program stays on the system. I opened the Windows Task Manager window, and killed all processes beginning with "avg". But they begin executing again in short order. There is no tray icon for AVG Antivirus, and from the AVG program itself, I cannot find an option to stop the scan. What should nI do to kill the AVG Aantivirus scan so I can complete the Combofix scan? Shoule I just delete the Program Files folder for AVG Antivirus?
Below is the ComboFix log.

I will run SIW to determine the op sys version, and then proceed to get System Restore Console installed.

Thanks,

Ron Cobb

SIW shows the OP Sys as WinXP Professional SP3.

So, I will use the SP2 System Restrore download, fight?

Thanks.

Ron Cobb

Yes.

You're running two anti-virus programs:

AV: avast! antivirus 4.8.0 [VPS 000000-0] *On-access scanning disabled* (Outdated) {7591DB91-41F0-48A3-B128-1A293FD8233D}
AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}

Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with each other, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove either:
avast!
AVG

Reboot and do a new Combofix (ABCD) scan
Avast uninstalled. New ComboFix log below.

I will be away on travel from early tomorrow until late Sunday night. I hope we can keep this thread open. I will start working it again Monday morning.

Thanks,

Ron Cobb

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Also delete these
E:\ABCD.exe
E:\QooBox
E:\combofix.txt
E:\combofix-quarantine-files.txt

If you used DeFogger
You must remember to re-enable your Emulation drivers once we are finished, double click DeFogger to run the tool.

  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
    5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read How to Prevent Malware:
