Ok, for about 3 days now I've noticed the little laptop that could is having cpu issues. Sitting at 100% for a long time even with little processes running. Some slow downs. Just acting buggy.

I've had it lock up totally saturday afternoon losing what I had worked on. AVG scans show up clean, a trojan had been found earlier in the month, the 4th.. but, no issues since till the other day.

Only things that have changed was a microsoft update, and checking out a couple abandonware games from ages past(legit site tho).

Any who, you guys have helped with the old PC so now that the laptop is acting up you were my 1st thought. Any help is appreciated.

Here comes the reports:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

1.Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
2.Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
3.Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
4.Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
5.Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Going by the symptoms that you discribed this may not be from malware, but I will give your computer a good checking to make sure.

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Vuze

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

Cyber Education Letter
File sharing infects 500,000 computers
USAToday

You must uninstall all P2P programs before I can continue with cleaning your computer.

If you continue to use P2P programs, we see no purpose in cleaning your machine as it is pretty much certain that, if you continue to use them, your computer will get infected again.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • log from MBAM
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

removed Java 6 update 3 and vuze toolbar. Autoupdater for Java wasn't present, nor as vuze an vuze_remote. Cleaned out and updated Java. Ran TFC, had to reboot but nothing came back up for it. Ran Kaspersky, which took hours and was super sluggish the whole time. Now, Kaspersky finished with nothing found. However, after closing Kaspersky the laptop nearly locked up. Only things of note I had open/active was Yahoo messanger (auto loads and I didn't shut it off), Whatthetech website, and one other website. I could barely get webpages to minimize or close, if they did it would take 30 seconds for anything to register. Tried to bring up task manager to see if I could figure out what was going nuts but it wouldn't pop up. And well… after 3-4 hours of running kaspersly I was kinda fed up with it acting up and hard reset. I guess I'll see if it acts up still, going on 6am so I'm beat. .
ok, quick test of things… 2 webpages open. Whatthetech, and lolcats. yahoo messanger up. CPU sits at 100% and typing into ymsn is super slow, and sending messages takes 15-30 seconds. Where as last week I could have way more then 2 webpages and have a quick lag free chat with my friend on ymsn without problems. Now I just dunno.. If I close all web pages ymsn returns to it's normal speedy self, but opening one spells certain doom. I reinstalled ymsn just now hoping that might fix things, but nada. Last week it was running fine, but now it's like it's suffered from a head injury and its just not right.
Thursday I did these updates: Office 2007 Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB981715) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB979683) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB980232) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2010 (KB890830) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB981349) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB978338) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB977816) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB978601) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB979309) Thursday, April 15, 2010 Automatic Updates That was the only major updates I'd done and it was about thursday or friday that it started acting up. Also, whenever I try to click something from the toolbar like task manager or date/time or even my email notification it lags. Or doesn't start at all. Like if I double click the date/time, the rundll32.exe will pop in processes, but the Date/Time Properties box wont come up always. Takes a number of tries. Somethings wrong… I just can't see what. Driving me batty.

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.
